A group of Republican senators said Wednesday they will try to block President Obamas choice to head the Social Security Administration until an investigation of a troubled computer contract is concluded.
All 11 Republican members of the Senate Finance Committee signed a letter to the nominee Wednesday. They said there is evidence that Social Security officials may have misled Congress and investigators about problems with a $300 million computer program that doesnt work.
Obama nominated acting commissioner Carolyn W. Colvin to a six-year term in June. Colvin was deputy commissioner for 3 1 /2 years. She has been acting commissioner since February 2013.
We cannot in good faith allow a nomination for any position that requires the advice and consent of the Senate to proceed to a vote as long as the specter of a potential criminal investigation surrounds the nominee and/or those in their inner circle, wrote the senators, led by Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, the top Republican on the committee.
Therefore, the senators wrote, it is essential to address your role with respect to this inquiry before each of us can make an informed decision on how to vote for your nomination once it reaches the full Senate for consideration.
A Social Security spokeswoman said in an e-mail, Carolyn W. Colvin is not personally the subject of any criminal investigation.
Agency representatives previously briefed members of the Senate and House regarding the issues raised in the Senate Republican Finance members letter, agency spokeswoman LaVenia LaVelle said. The acting commissioner will respond timely and fully to the members requests and continue to cooperate with Congress and any related investigation.
LaVelle noted that the agency just received the senators letter Wednesday.
Social Security officials have acknowledged that the agency spent nearly $300 million on a computer project that doesnt work. The agency, however, is trying to revive it. The program is supposed to help workers process and manage claims for disability benefits.

House Republican leaders pushed ahead Wednesday with a plan to avoid a budget showdown next week by funding the government well into 2015, banking on the prospect of help from Democrats to outweigh conservative opposition.
The most conservative Republicans in both the House and Senate broadcast their concerns Wednesday over GOP leaders' plans to keep the government running beyond Dec. 11, and to set up a fight over President Barack Obama's immigration proposal early next year.
The mounting resistance from conservatives means that Republicans will likely need to rely on some Democratic votes to pass the measure in the House. With some Democrats willing to consider the legislation, House GOP leaders were moving forward with their plan, eager to steer clear of a government shutdown next week, aides said.
Under the two-pronged proposal that House Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio) pitched to his ranks Tuesday, lawmakers would fund almost all of the government through September 2015 through a measure tying together 11 spending bills still under negotiation. Republicans would position themselves to take aim at Obama's plan to shield millions of illegal immigrants from deportation by extending funding for the Homeland Security Department just until early next year, when Republicans will control both chambers of Congress.
As the deadline loomed, Obama planned to discuss budget issues, among other topics, in a one-on-one meeting with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), said White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest.
"We obviously need to see some budget legislation pass through both houses of Congress . . . over the course of the next week or so," Earnest said.
To express their opposition to Obama's immigration action, House Republicans are expected to vote Thursday on a bill based on one from Rep. Ted Yoho (R., Fla.) that would seek to block the plan. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) has said his chamber won't consider the measure, making the House vote largely symbolic.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas), a potential 2016 presidential candidate, suggested the House effort was a "meaningless show vote" and argued that Republicans couldn't vote for any legislation that funds implementation of Mr. Obama's immigration executive order without violating their repeated campaign pledges to block the policy.

House Republican leaders are close to sealing a deal with Democrats over objections from Tea Party lawmakers to fund most of the U.S. government through September 2015 and avoid a repeat of last years partial shutdown.
House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers, a Kentucky Republican, said today that he and his Senate counterpart, Democrat Barbara Mikulski, plan to sign off on the final deal tomorrow. House Speaker John Boehner has rejected calls from the Tea Party wing to require a spending bill to defund President Barack Obamas orders easing deportations for some undocumented immigrants.
A previously skeptical Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, this morning signaled that the funding measure is likely to get members support if Boehner entertains some Democratic demands. A vote would take place next week. Congress must pass funding legislation by Dec. 11 or risk a partial government shutdown.
Let us supply the votes to keep government open but we cant do that unless we have a bill worthy of our support, Pelosi, of California, told reporters today.
Boehner and his lieutenants in the House devised a two-step strategy to keep party members from using the government funding bill to vent their displeasure over Obamas action on immigration. A Republican bid to use a spending bill to defund Obamacare led to a 16-day partial government shutdown in October 2013.
