Rap sheet for Republican aide who rapped Sasha and Malia Obama

The Republican House aide who told President Obamas teenager daughters to dress like you deserve respect and try showing a little class turns out not to have been a teen angel herself.

As first reported in The Smoking Gun, GOP staffer Elizabeth Lauten was arrested as a 17-year-old for larceny at the Belk Department Store in her native North Carolina. The charges were later dropped when, as a first time offender, Lauten did not get into further trouble.

Children, especially first daughters, are off limits, Sean Spicer, communications director, Republican National Committee.

Lauten set off a firestorm with a Facebook post last week, after first daughters Sasha and Malia Obama appeared visibly bored at the annual White House ceremony at which the President pardons a Thanksgiving turkey.

The ceremony rarely ruffles feathers, except years ago when the bird suddenly started flapping in President Reagans face.

Dear Sasha and Malia, I get youre both in those awful teen years, but youre part of the First Family. Try showing a little class, Lauten wrote.

She then became pasty toward the Obama girls parents, writing: Then again, your mother and father dont respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter, so Im guessing youre coming up a little short in the good role model department.

Nonetheless, stretch yourselves.Rise to the occasion. Act like being in the White House matters to you. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar.

The resulting Facebook/Twitter firestorm brought a quick, somewhat abject apology from Lauten, who has held senior House Republican communications posts.

Local Republican, Democratic parties react to final senate debate

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - Leaders from both the Caddo Republican and Democratic parties are sounding off after the conclusion of the final debate between the run-off Senate candidates Congressman Dr. Bill Cassidy and Senator Mary Landrieu.

About a dozen people gathered around a television streaming the debate at the Shreveport Democratic headquarters on Fairfield Avenue.

They watched intently, mostly silent. However, as soon as the debate wrapped, the group was in good spirits, saying they felt their candidate won the debate.

Stephanie Lynch is the Caddo Parish Democratic Party Chair. She's proud of the watch party's turnout.

"As you saw it was a diverse group, men, women, black and white, we want our state to be unified to work together," said Lynch. "I just think it showed tonight that we unified behind Senator Landrieu, we are looking for a victory Dec.6."

None of the Republican organizations KSLA News 12 reached out to in Caddo, Shreveport or Bossier held formal debate watch parties.

Caddo Parish Republican Party Chair Louis Avallone watched the debate and says "I think issue after issue, demonstrated that he understood, the fundamentals, about why that issue was important, not only to Louisianians, but to the betterment of our country."

Both Lynch and Avallone feel their parties candidates will win this Saturday's election.

"I think the state is going to go for Senator Landrieu, they want someone who can get something done," said Lynch.

"I think if Louisianians come out and vote with the principals that are important to Louisiana, I think Bill Cassidy wins this in a heart beat," said Avallone.

Republican congressman's aide resigns over criticism of Obama's daughters

A communications director for a Republican congressman resigned on Monday, amid public outrage over remarks she made on Facebook about President Barack Obamas teenaged daughters.

Elizabeth Lauten, communications director for Representative Stephen Fincher of Tennessee, wrote in a post that Malia, 16, and Sasha, 13, should have shown more class at Wednesdays annual White House turkey pardoning ceremony.

Act like being in the White House matters to you, Lauten wrote. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar. And certainly dont make faces during televised public events.

Lauten also took a swing at Malia and Sashas parents: Then again your mother and father dont respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter, so Im guessing youre coming up a little short in the good role model department.

Lauten deleted the post, but not before screen grabs had been taken and shared across social media. The post went viral, with critics suggesting the GOP staffer had gone too far. Some called for her resignation. Hours later, she posted an apology.

After many hours of prayer, talking to my parents, and rereading my words online I can see more clearly just how hurtful my words were, Lauten wrote in a post that was published just before she made her Facebook page private.

In a phone interview on Monday, Lauten told NBC News her resignation was in the works. Congressman Finchers chief of staff, Jessica Carter, said Lauten had resigned.

At the annual turkey pardon, Malia and Sasha appeared slightly bored as they watched their father pardon birds named Mac and Cheese. Photos of the sisters casting exasperated looks at one another as their father spoke sparked mostly playful comments on social media and from some media outlets.

In a dizzying turn, some Republicans criticized the news medias coverage of Lautens comments, calling the attention politically biased.
