McAllister to Retire From Congress After Kissing Scandal

Republican U.S. Representative Vance McAllister of Louisiana wont seek re-election in November, weeks after a security videotape surfaced showed him passionately kissing a member of his staff who wasnt his wife.

Theres no doubt Ive made a mistake, he said in an e-mailed statement. Ive failed those I care most about and let down the people who elected me to represent them. I take full responsibility for this personal failure and Im truly sorry for what Ive done.

Today, I am announcing that I will not seek re-election, but I will continue to be that voice and will uphold the office to which I was elected to serve for the remainder of my term, he said.

The congressmans decision follows calls from Republican leaders for McAllister to step down. His term expires in early January 2015.

McAllister had been absent from the U.S. House since the video surfaced April 7, missing a number of votes including one on the House Republican budget. Hes set to return to Washington for House votes today.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal on April 10 said McAllisters behavior was an embarrassment and that the best way for him to get privacy and work on putting his family back together is to resign from Congress.

Roger Villere, chairman of the Republican Party of Louisiana, in a statement urged McAllister to resign and said his extreme hypocrisy is an example of why ordinary people are fed up with politics.

McAllister, married with five children, campaigned for the House last year as a Christian conservative. He was elected in November to replace fellow Louisiana Republican Rodney Alexander, who resigned to take a job in Jindals cabinet.

Buoyed by an endorsement from reality television star Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame, McAllister came in second in a 14-way primary, then won a runoff election.

Before the video emerged of McAllister kissing a staff member, who also was married, he was known in Washington for bringing another Duck Dynasty star, Willie Robertson, as his guest to the State of the Union address. The staff member resigned, according to the Associated Press, after the Ouachita Citizen posted the video on its website.

Republican leaders in town Tuesday for convention site visit

Cincinnati leaders are preparing to roll out the red carpet for national Republican officials.

The Republican National Committee Convention Site Selection Committee is visiting all six cities vying to land the 2016 convention.

The team arrives in Cincinnati Tuesday.

The visit is one of the final steps before the next round of eliminations in May.

The committee will visit Cleveland Wednesday. Cincinnati is the second to last city on the teams visit circuit.

If Cincinnati makes the cut, a larger delegation of Republican officials will visit the Queen City in late May or early June.

The full Republican committee will vote on its choice for convention host city by late summer or early fall.

Ohio is traditionally a battleground state during presidential elections.

The streetcar could be a selling feature for the citys bid.

The project manager said Monday that people could begin riding the rails two months earlier than expected. He estimated the loop could open by September 2016.

Republican trustee defends WWU president against GOP legislator

State Rep. Jason Overstreet, R-Lynden, is dead wrong and woefully ignorant of history in calling for the resignation of Western Washington University President Bruce Shepard, former Republican Secretary of State and WWU Trustee Ralph Munro wrote on Sunday.

Western Washington University President Bruce Shepard:He wants student enrollment to reflect states growing diversity.

Munro used a Bellingham Herald op-ed piece to deliver a ringing defense of Shepard and his call for the university to reflect the growing diversity of Washingtons population. And he had stinging words for Overstreet.

As the second largest employer in Whatcom County and the educator of many employed elsewhere I would think that Rep. Overstreet would be a supporter of Westerns efforts to ensure education and prosperity to all our states children, regardless of their race, religion or background.

Shepard is under attack from right-wing groups over a recent blog post in which he stated: In the decades ahead, should we be as white as we are today, we will be relentlessly driven toward mediocrity or, become a shadow of our current self.

Overstreet, at the far right flank of Republicans caucus in Olympia, seized on the blog, putting out a press release stating: He should resign immediately from his university president position.

President Shepards continued and unflinching adherence to an intellectually void ideology that divides on skin color rather than uniting based on the content of character demands that he apologize to the students, potential students and taxpayers who fund Western Washington University.

Overstreet is dead wrong, said Munro.

What Dr. Shepard said what he really said is exactly what all of us on the campus leadership team have been saying for years, said Munro, who was Westerns student body president in the 1960s.

To continue our success as the states premier regional university, we must make sure that our faculty and student population reflect the population demographics of our state, not just today, but in years to come.
