Vice President for Development
BACKGROUND: Founded in 1963, Sponsors for Educational Opportunity is one of New York Citys first mentoring programs for high school students of color. Over the past five decades, SEO has expanded its programs to benefit more than 5,000 young people, helping them to succeed throughout high school, college, and their careers. SEO has a demonstrated track record of achievement and fulfills its mission through three dynamic programs: SEO Scholars, an 8-year supplemental education program that is unparalleled in helping urban public school students in NYC and San Francisco get to and through competitive colleges; SEO Career, the nations premier summer internship program for underrepresented college students; and SEO Alternative Investments, providing education, exposure, training, and mentoring to talented professionals underrepresented in the alternative investments sector. FUNDING: 100% privately funded, SEO has a fiscal year 2015 annual operating budget of $11 million, of which approximately $6 million is generated through the development department, including a gala that raises approximately $2 million. With over $20 million in total assets, SEO has a very solid financial foundation and has earned 4-star ratings by Charity Navigator for the past several years.
The SEO Board seeks to secure an additional $30 million in philanthropic support with the goal of dramatically increasing the number of students participating in the Scholars Program.
PRIMARY FUNCTION: A newly-created role, the Vice President for Development will work collaboratively with the CEO and Board to develop and implement an aggressive plan to increase and diversify contributions from individual donors, who comprise approximately 50% of SEO Scholars support, as well as from institutional donors. S/he has overall responsibility for the SEO Scholars development activities, encompassing annual giving, major gifts, corporation/foundation, and special events.
The Vice President for Development reports to the SEO President & CEO, and also works collaboratively with the Board of Directors to maximize their involvement in fundraising. Reporting to the Vice President is a team of six.
