I was stunned and elated: former World Food Programme employee from Lethbridge reacts to Nobel Peace Prize – Global News

This years Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), which has been around since the early 1960s.

The organization is a leading humanitarian group that looks to improve food security across the globe.

In 2019, the WFP assisted approximately 97 million people in 88 different countries.

During a SACPA (Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs) conference on Thursday, WFP spokesperson Julie Marshall said she hopes this honour will raise awareness for the importance of the organizations work, especially during a time when hunger is worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It shines a light on 690-million people who go to bed hungry every single day, Marshall said. It highlights the hard work and sacrifice of present and past WFP staff, who over the last 50 years, have really made the organization what it is.

One of those integral employees was Lethbridges Trevor Page, who worked for the United Nations for 31 years. Born in England, Page lived and worked all around the world serving as head of mission in India and China, working through the civil war in Sudan, along with numerous other efforts.

Page said he was stunned and elated at the announcement.

When I was working for the World Food Programme, I never thought that we would be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, he admitted. Were a food aid organization, not a peace-making organization.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee selects the winner of the prestigious award, and said the WFP was chosen for its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.

Conflict forces millions of people to abandon their crops, their homes, their jobs, Marshall explained.

Page said theres no way of eliminating conflict entirely, but by using their connection to food insecurity, there are ways of de-escalating it.

We are able to get food to both sides of a conflict, and to get the rebels and governments to cease fire not bomb our convoys on the days that were able to get them to agree to give us free passage, he said.

After retiring from the UN, Page served in India as the CEO of an American social-marketing company involved in reproductive health. He is still involved with the group, giving consultations and keeping up with the WFPs work, and has been living in Lethbridge for the last 20 years.

Demand For Local And Organic Food Is On The Rise, Positively Impacting The Food And Beverage Market, As Per The Global Food And Beverage Market Report…

LONDON, Oct. 15, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- According to The Business Research Companys research report on the food and beverage market, the demand for local, sustainable, and organic food production is increasing. Organic food production places a strong emphasis on consumer health, environmental protection and animal welfare. Consumers are becoming more concerned with how food is raised and prepared and are willing to pay a little more for something they recognize as healthy. With the coronavirus crisis, a lot of focus on supporting local brands is being emphasized as well.

Across Europe, there is a very high import rate (especially for fruits and vegetables) as the rate of production is far lower than the consumption demands for organic produce. But in May 2020, the organic food and drink sales in the UK increased by 6.1%, almost doubled from the previous years growth of 3.2%. This demand for organic products will positively impact the market for food and beverages, as organic foods are comparatively more expensive than conventional foods.

This demand for organic food is not just for humans but extends to animals as well! Pet owners concern about their pets health is driving the demand for premium and organic pet foods as pet owners often view pets as family members and are willing to spend higher for the best pet products and services. Organic pet foods are free from artificial colors, flavors, antibiotics, synthetic hormones, toxic pesticides and preservatives, whereas premium pet foods contain higher quality ingredients than economy or generic pet foods. Companies that manufacture premium pet foods formulate diets according to the nutritional requirements of an animal.

For example, premium brand companies offer foods that are specially formulated for growing puppies, large- and small-breed dogs, lactating and gestating animals, and geriatric animals. The increasing demand for premium pet foods will help in market growth going forward.

The Business Research Companys report titled Food And Beverage Global Market Report 2020-30: COVID-19 Impact and Recovery covers major food and beverage companies, food and beverage market share by company, food and beverage manufacturers, food and beverage infrastructure market size, and food and beverage market forecasts. The report also covers the global food and beverage market segments. The food and beverage market is segmented by type into alcoholic beverage, nonalcoholic beverage, grain products, bakery & confectionery, other foods products, frozen and fruit & veg, dairy food, meat, poultry and seafood, syrup, seasoning, oils, & general food, animal and pet food, tobacco products, by distribution channel into supermarkets/hypermarkets, convenience stores, e-commerce, others, by nature into organic, conventional. Subsegments covered are beer manufacturing (breweries), wine and brandy manufacturing (wineries), spirits manufacturing (distilleries), coffee and tea manufacturing, soft drink and ice manufacturing, flour, rice and malt manufacturing, other grain products manufacturing, breakfast cereal manufacturing, sugar and confectionery product manufacturing, bread and bakery product manufacturing, cookie, cracker, pasta, and tortilla manufacturing, perishable prepared food manufacturing, snack food manufacturing, all other miscellaneous food manufacturing, frozen food manufacturing, canned/ambient food manufacturing, milk and butter manufacturing, cheese manufacturing, dry, condensed, and evaporated dairy product manufacturing, ice cream and frozen dessert manufacturing, meat products manufacturing, poultry manufacturing, seafood manufacturing, flavoring syrup and concentrate manufacturing, seasoning and dressing manufacturing, fats and oils manufacturing, pet food manufacturing, animal food manufacturing, cigarettes, cigars and cigarillos manufacturing, smoking and other tobacco products manufacturing.

The global food and beverage market size is expected to grow from $5.94 trillion in 2019 to $6.11 trillion in 2020 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.9%. The low growth is mainly due to economic slowdown across countries owing to the COVID-19 outbreak and the measures to contain it. The market is then expected to recover and grow at a CAGR of 7% from 2021 and reach $7.53 trillion in 2023.

With increasing social media penetration, social media and digital media marketing are driving the market for different types of foods and drinks such as generic, natural, organic, premium, super-premium, grain-free and others. There are many blogs and social media sites which publish articles on fitness, skincare diets, healthcare, and animal care. These sites educate people and help in identifying best foods available in the market depending on nutritional value and benefits. Since there is more scientific knowledge about foods, drinks, and their ingredients that is now easily available and widespread through the internet, there is more demand for such items, which drives the food and beverages market.

WordPress Adds Option to Publish Entire Blog Posts as Twitter Threads – Social Media Today

I want to start this post by noting that we do not endorse this activity, and we take no responsibility for people flooding Twitter with ridiculously long tweet threads which would have been better left as blog posts.

That said, WordPress has this week added new functionality that will enable users to re-publish entire WordPress blog posts as tweet threads, "with just two extra clicks".

As you can see here, the new process will essentially convert your WordPress blog post into a tweet thread. Any images or videos you include in your post will be added into the thread, in relation to where they're embedded in your original post, while you'll also be able to see where your tweets will split up your post before sharing your tweet stream.

Why would you want to do this?

I mean, some people like tweet threads, and it could provide you with another avenue for promoting your content and sparking conversation on the platform. But you'll also be losing all your site traffic - rather than using Twitter to drive people back to your website, where you can assess relevant metrics, determine strategic direction, monetize your audience, etc. Instead of this, you can now give people the opportunity to read your stuff on Twitter instead.

I don't really know if that's overly valuable, but if you have a highly engaged Twitter community, and you want to boost your content reach in a new way, maybe it's a good option. Twitter's generally not a great driver of referral traffic anyway, so maybe, this could be a good way to maximize content engagement without losing too much in terms of site visitors.

It actually seems more likely that the reverse could be beneficial - an option to convert your Twitter threads into blog posts. Which is also possible.

So, it's something to consider - and it's also something to keep in mind when you start seeing long-running tweet threads appearing in people's feeds. Again, we don't recommend this, and suggest that the option be used only for shorter blog posts.

But the capacity is now available for such, either way.

In other WordPress news, both Facebook and Instagram are removing support for embedded content on WordPress sites starting from October 24th. That means that if you've ever embedded a Facebook or Instagram post on your WordPress site, it'll likely stop working in two weeks time, unless you have a Facebook developer account - you can read more about this change on Search Engine Journal.

Social scene: RSViP – ‘The power of marketing in the digital space’ – East Midlands Business Link

On Thursday 24September, RSViP held its most recent event online with talks from twodigital marketing experts.

Trevor launched a food business in 2009, building a community around jam and preserve making, with hiswife Rosemary, with workshops, recipe books and an online recipe site and blog. A monthly preserving magazine, in both digital and paper formats, came shortly afterwards and the business fluctuated over the years then hit lockdown.Four months on the couple have quadrupled their monthly turnover. The event also featuredB2B Digital LinkedIn Coach, Charlie Whyman, whospends her time consulting, coaching and mentoring teams and individuals on strategic B2B Marketing and LinkedIn. She is also the host of The Curiosity Key Podcast and founder of The Curious Marketing Club.

This session isjust one example of RSViPs work tokeep businesses connected through troubling times, in the last six months since lockdown began in March.

Taking their in-person Network Social events online, business was able to continue as (un)usual. Named Keep calm and carry on digitally, the events have been running for 6 months now.

Founder of RSViP, Fiona Duncan-Steer, said:Its been a very challenging time for many businesses, in particular the events and hospitality industry. We have been hit extremely hard and it has been difficult seeing many of our clients anxious and struggling. As such many of us have had to switch into survival mode and do whatever it takes to keep going, stay visible and above all, support one another, which is exactly what I decided to do.

After a forty eight hour panic following the first Government announcement, I pulled my socks up and hosted my first ever online event in March, to a positive and grateful response from both business professionals and University students and we are now preparing to host our eighth online event on 29th October and will continue for as long as we need to.

I have very quickly had to adapt a business Ive been running in much of the same way for the past 12 years in a matter of weeks and Id be lying if I said it hasnt been a challenge at times. Knowing I have such a powerful and extensive network and reach, there was no option but to go digital! Ive learnt so much during this process and just feel happy Ive been able to keep going and help so many others along the way.

Fiona has collaborated with brand strategist Matt Davies, Brand Strategist & Co-hostto host the online events and together they both offer their expertise from a business and marketing perspective, inviting guest speakers to share their stories and insights on topics such as how to stay connected in the digital space, maintaining valuable relationships at a distance and such-like, experimenting with various formats and timings to co-inside with the changing times along the way.

Over 300 East Midlands professionals have also joined the new LinkedIn group RSViP Business & The City during lockdown, with the groups intention to bring businesses together to share useful resources and information.Fiona has also been developing her training business, and launching hervirtual training hub, offering businesses free resources.
