Social media are indeed booming! By now you should be used to various types of social media-based clich such as social media marketing, social media experts, social media consultants, social media week, social media awards and others too numerous to mention.

Whether for good or bad, the point is that an increased number of people have joined the social media bandwagon, but my hope is that you are part of those using it more positively because, lets face it, social media have a negative side as well.

That will certainly be the subject for another piece. But for today, I want to focus on a trend that is growing. Recently, I was a guest speaker at an event; a member of the audience came up with his thought on the use of social media as a tool for online marketing.

He said, I understand one of the strategies for successful online marketing is the shorter, the better. I have, therefore, stuck to the use of only twitter for my social media marketing because it seems to be the trending platform.

He concluded by asserting that he was not getting the required results. He then went further to ask what he could do to improve his lot in this regard.

Time could not permit me to give him a comprehensive answer there and then; hence, the need to put this piece together, so that business owners and the general public will be aware of how to go about handling and managing their social media marketing strategies.

The point is that social media have played an important role in reforming the principles of marketing in the context of digitisation.

We can justify this statement by the fact that businesses are increasingly emphasising on effective social media marketing strategies as a part of their marketing mix.

You can learn a lot about a firm by following it on social media as such platforms provide an opportunity for customers and business owners to have real-time conversation, exchange useful ideas, receive structured feedback and build strong, long-term relationship with each other.
