Who is the ‘Latino voter?’ 2020 election showed Latino voters are diverse and vary region to region – The Arizona Republic

AnaPaula Cortes and Claudia Montijo share a common cultural background.

Both areLatina womenof Mexican descent. Both are in their 20s. And both are professionals. Cortes is a freelance writer in New York City who was born in Chula Vista, California, but grew up nearby Ensenada, a port city in the Mexican state ofBaja California.

Montijo, the daughter of Mexican immigrants, is an accountant who grew up in Nogales, Arizona, and now lives in Scottsdale.

But their political views couldn't be further apart.

Cortes is a diehard progressive who voted for Joe Biden because she likes his pro-immigrationpolicies and was deeply offended by President Donald Trump's attacks on Mexican immigrants.

"For me, Biden was the best option. There was less hate," Cortes said.

Early voters who are Latino and are supporting Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden talk about why they are voting for him. Arizona Republic

Montijo is a staunch Catholic conservative who voted forTrump because he opposed abortion rights and she believes he did a good job building the economy despite the coronavirus pandemic.

"I'm pro-life, so that is huge to me and that is one of the biggest reasons that I voted for him," Montijo said.

Their political differences show how Latino voters are not alike even among those with similar cultural backgrounds.

"That is a perfect example of why you can't take Latino voters for granted. You can't assume they are going to vote one way," said Andrew Lim,quantitative research director at the New American Economy, a New York City-based nonprofit research group. "You may assume because you are a person of color you may feel a certain way, but things like faith and things like your perspective on the economy are also just as important to the way that people vote and that goes the same for Latino voters as well."

The 2020 election shattered the widely held assumption that Latinos are a monolithic bloc that largely vote the same way. Analyses emerging from voting data shows that there are many differences in the wayLatinos vote based on gender, nationality, religious background, education levels and region of the country.

"I think a lot of people took for granted or assumed that Hispanic or Latino voters were a monolith that they voted en masse in one direction, which is simply not the case," Lim said.

For example, the Trump campaign's attempt to paint theBiden/Harris Democratic ticketas beholden to socialists, even wrongfully, resonated with Cuban American, Venezuelan American and Colombian voters in south Florida, Lim said.

Trump also reportedly had strong support from Mexican American voters in predominantly Latino counties in the Rio Grande Valley in southern Texas, where Trump capitalizedon fears that a Biden presidency would meanloss of high-paying jobs in the region's oil industry, Lim said.

Trump carried both Florida and Texas on Nov. 3.

In Arizona, a grassroots campaign to mobilize Latino votershelped tipArizona from red to blue, Lim said.

In Maricopa County, home to 60% of the state's population, precincts with high concentrations of Latino voters showed 75% support for Biden, according to an analysis of voting data by the UCLA Latino Politics and Policy Initiative.

Future campaigns need to understand the differences and nuances among Latino voters to better tailor messages, especially in battleground states such as Arizona, Nevada, Florida and Georgia,Lim said.

"Context matters and the nuances in the population matter so going forward smart campaigns would pay attention to that and craft messaging and arguments to support themselves based on that," Lim said. "Not just the one size fits all strategy."

There are now more than 60.9 million Latinos in the U.S. They make up more than 18% of the U.S. population, and 13% of the electorate, according to Pew Research Center.

In Arizona, Latinos make up32% of the population and were expected to make up one in four voters in 2020, according to UCLA's Latino Policy and Politics Initiative.

Latinos make up an increasingly larger share of the electorate in all states, according to Pew. In Arizona, 700,000 Latinos voted in 2020, according to a Latino Decisions/UnidosUS/Somos survey.

Latinos trace their ancestry to Spanish-speaking countries and Brazil. But there is a lot of racial and ethnicdiversity among Latinos, who can beWhite, Black, Indigenous, and Asian, and often are a mixture of many of those races.

While Mexican Americans make up the largest share of Latinos, there are also large numbers of Latinos in the U.S. who trace their ancestry to Cuba, Guatemala, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Colombia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Brazil and Puerto Rico.

Some Latinos are immigrants, others come from families that go back generations, some to before there was a United States.

Some are of mixed heritage, for example, a Mexican mother and a Cuban father.

Some Puerto Ricans were born in the U.S. while some come from the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory. And while Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens they are often treated like immigrants by people on the mainland.

A survey of more than 15,000 Latino voters conducted in the final days before the election by Latino Decisions/UnidosUS/Somos found many differences among groups of Latino voters.

Latinos overall voted for Bidenby a large margin.

Seven out of 10 Latinos nationally voted for Biden over Trump, according to the Latino Decisions/UnidosUS/Somossurvey.

Biden did betteramong Mexican American voters. Biden received 74% of the vote among Mexican American voters.Trump received 23%.

Biden received a 59% majority from Latino voters of Central American ancestry. Trump received 29%.

Trump did better with Cuban Americans who gave Trump 52% of their votes to Biden's 45%, according to the survey. Trump also captured 40% of the vote from Latino voters of South American ancestry, the survey said.

"The Latino vote proved critical and toboth parties in different places, which sends that message that meaningful outreach is essential," said Clarissa Martinez de Castro. She is deputy vice president for research advocacy, and legislation, at the Latino civil rights group UnidosUS.

While a lot of attention has been paid post-election to Trump's surprisingly strong support among Latino voters, Biden still won the majority of the Latino vote in every state, she said.

Biden also had the strongest support from young Latinos, receiving 74% from Latino voters 18 to 29;receiving 75% of Latino voters over 60; and receiving 73% from Latina women, the survey found.

While there are many differences among Latino voters, the Latino Decisions pollshowed they feel strongly about many of the same issues, among them concern over the handling of the coronavirus pandemic, support for an economic stimulus package, and support for immigration reform, Martinez said.

Cortes, 26, the Latina freelance writer in New York who voted for Biden, said the political divisions among Latinos became apparent to her in comments she read on Homeis, a social networking, support and jobs platform for immigrants with 400,000 users.

She was surprised to seethat many Latinos on the platform supported Trump, despite his repeateddisparaging remarkstowards Latino immigrants and his attemptto divide Mexico and the United States with a border wall.

"Something that I saw a lot was that Cubans, Venezuelans, people who come from communism or socialismthink that Democrats are going to make this country like that," Cortes said. "So they are Trump supporters, 100%."

"But then there are the other Latinos who say if you support Trump, you are not a real Latino," Cortes said.

Homeis conducted its own poll and found that Latinos from countries with communist and socialist authoritarian dictatorships such as Cuba,Venezuela and Nicaragua favored Trump, said Laura Arrazola Lievano, who manages the Latin American community on the Homeis platform.

"Their political inclinations in the U.S. are a reflection of that fear and that reality that they probably left their country because of these regimes," said Arrazola Lievano, who is from Colombia.

"Other Latinos in general, we have seen a pro-Biden side because they have seen what Trump has done about immigration, what he has said about Latinos, what he said about Mexicans," Arrazola Lievano said.

A total of 1,000 Homeis users answered the poll, with 58% leaning toward Biden and 42% in support of Trump.

Montijo, 28, the Latina accountant from Scottsdale, said she voted for Trump in 2016 and in 2020.

Montijobelieves Trump's rhetoric about Latino immigrants was misconstrued as disparaging Latinos. He was condemning illegalimmigration, she said.

"I don't think that is what he meant," Montijo said. "In a way, he's right in the sense that people need to come to this country legally."

Montijo sometimes clashed with her father, who voted for Biden, over her support for Trump, and with other family members, although her mother and sister also voted for Trump.

"Even though they were not directed at me, I did hear from other family members a lot of negative comments towards Trump and his administration, that he hasn't done anything, and he's racist and blah, blah, blah," Montijo said. "But I don't think any of those family members were educated. I think they were all going off what they hear on television."

Montijo said she also heard comments from family members that voting for Trump "is going against our people."

"I really don't believe that is the case," she said.

What is MeWe? Everything you need to know about the social network competing with Parler. – Mashable

Now that you know everything about Parler, the conservative social network thats currently the number one free app in the App Store, theres yet another social network popular with Trump supporters that you may want to know about.

It's called MeWe, and it's currently the number two free app in the App Store.

Heres everything you need to know about the site competing with Parler for conservatives looking for a new online home.

MeWe is an alternative social networking site that's currently experiencing a surge in new users as Trump supporters search for new platforms in order to avoid Facebook and Twitter. It bills itself as the next-gen social network and centers its sales pitch to new users around data privacy and providing an ad-free experience.

MeWe is owned by a company called Sgrouples, which was actually also the name of the platform early on. It was founded by internet entrepreneur Mark Weinstein. In an interview with Rolling Stone last year, Weinstein called himself one of the guys who invented social media. While thats giving himself a bit too much credit, Weinstein was in the space early on. In 1998, he created a very early social network type site called SuperGroups, which was shut down by its investors in 2001.

In 2011, Weinstein started a new online business venture which eventually resulted in the creation of MeWe.

Almost everyone is using MeWe! Let me explain

There are accounts for a number of major news outlets and personalities on MeWe. For example, heres President Donald Trumps account.

However, its not really Trumps account. Neither he nor his team set the account up. MeWe did. The account can be followed by MeWes real users. It displays a feed of Trumps tweets on Twitter in real time.

There are unofficial MeWe accounts like this for the New York Times, the NFL, Fox News, HuffPost, and even the Onion.

On one hand, its good that any random user cant set up an account on this social network and pretend to be these official outlets. On the other hand, its also beneficial to MeWe to fill up its site with content from platforms it's trying to take on to make it seem like theres more activity on the site than there really is.

When it comes to MeWes real users, it may sound a lot like Parler, but it is a bit different.

For one, MeWe wasnt founded as a social network for conservatives. It just became one and welcomed them with open arms. The right-wing surge on the platform was first noticed in 2019 after Facebook started cracking down on vaccine misinformation. Many different types of conspiracy theorists, such as the anti-vaxxers, started joining the site, likely due to the strong anti-Facebook rhetoric pushed by the site.

Now, MeWe is experiencing a boom just like Parler as pro-Trump supporters boycott Facebook and Twitter over their anti-misinformation policies in the aftermath of Trumps defeat in the election.

It should also be noted that unlike Parler, MeWe does have users who arent conservative. Its not even all about politics like it is with Parler. There are MeWe groups for supporters of the Green Party, groups for dog and cat lovers, and arts and music groups, to name a few. However, the most active users on the site seem to be there to discuss conservative politics.

Users joining MeWe over the past few days are met with a message by its founder, Mark Weinstein, promoting the site's rules.

No Ads, No Targeting, No Political Bias, No Newsfeed Manipulation, and No BS! reads Weinsteins post.

But, again, just like Parler, MeWe is no free speech paradise. Obviously, theres the usual ban on unlawful conduct and content. But, the social networks policies also ban obscene or pornographic content as well as impersonating someone.

If youre just a regular person from around the world who has a political point of view and youre abiding by our terms of service, thats none of our business[but] if youre a conservative or a liberal and youre spewing hate, youre gonna be out, Weinstein told Rolling Stone last year.

Weinstein also told the magazine that there were no policies banning misinformation or fake news, which he categorizes as just opinion. Theres lots of QAnon content on MeWe, for example.

Yet, Weinstein also stressed that MeWe does not allow the promotion of groups on its platform, meaning users have to actually seek out the content. Ironically, this is exactly how Facebook deals with many types of groups spreading misinformation concerning topics like health. Mark Zuckerbergs network allows the content to exist, but it does not promote it.

Unlike Parler, MeWe isnt trying to replicate every other social media site. Weinsteins intent seems pretty clear in the marketing of the site and in his interviews: MeWe wants to be the alternative to Facebook.

This probably explains why the site tries to replicate Facebooks user interface. Users can give thumbs up, hearts, and smiley faces to posts. They can share posts to their various feeds. There are user profiles and separate pages, as well as a groups feature for people to congregate around a specific topic.

This is all set up very similar to how it is on Facebook, down to the messiness of the UI. However, MeWes design does make it feel like the whole platform was bought off one of those sites that sell turnkey website solutions so you too can be the next Mark Zuckerberg!

MeWe is currently the second most downloaded free social networking app on Apples App Store. (Thats because Parler, the number one overall free app, categorizes itself as a News app in the App Store.)

According to mobile analytics firm Sensor Tower, MeWe received 218,000 new installs on Google Play and the App Store in the U.S. during the period between last weeks election and yesterday.

Last year, Weinstein said that MeWe had 5 million users. However, just like with Parlers numbers, it pales in comparison to Facebooks 2.7 billion users or even Twitters 330 million users.

MeWe faces many of the same challenges any startup social media companies faces today: keeping users engaged on the site when everyone they know is on the more popular platforms.

However difficult MeWes growth will be, it may be financially in a place to compete.

The platform raised $5.2 million in 2018, bringing its total funding to $10 million, with backing from celebrity investors such as fashion designer Rachel Roy and Lynda.com founder, Lynda Weinman. Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who is considered the father of the world wide web, even has an advisor role with MeWe.

In his interview with Rolling Stone last year, Weinstein explained where the name MeWe came from.

My life is composed of me and then my we, which is everybody thats part of my life, he said. But, as MeWes platform fills with Trump supporters, MeWes success may rest on one man: President Trump.

Trump has yet to join any of these alternative social networks. However, he's about to lose many of the protections he receives from platforms like Twitter that allow him to spread harmful misinformation without being banned, so he may have to soon join one.

MeWe may think it's competing with Facebook, but the real competition appears to be with Parler, in a race to get Trump to join the one conservative social network to rule them all.

UPDATE: Nov. 11, 2020, 10 a.m. EST According to a spokesperson for MeWe, the platform now has 10 million users. One million of those users signed up for a MeWe account during the past 72 hours.

The company also says it has raised over $18 million dollars since its conception.

MeWe's spokesperson said Mark Weinstein wrote a statement condemning the Rolling Stone article cited in this piece, and has threatened legal action against the magazine.

Alternative social network CloutHub says it has been deplatformed by IBM – Reclaim The Net

Alternative social network CloutHub says its video hosting provider IBM has removed its video channels without warning.

CloutHub describes itself as a next-generation social network for social, civic and political networking and said that all 57 of its video channels were taken down by IBM on Friday.

CloutHubs founder and CEO Jeff Brain told Reclaim The Net IBM didnt give us any heads up, no warning, and took a shotgun approach to remove everything.

Brain added that the takedown impacted faith groups, police groups, a national news outlet and many more.

Double your web browsing speed with today's sponsor. Get Brave.

In an update, CloutHub wrote that its working to get the video channels restored and is currently moving its video hosting to another platform.

CloutHubs report of being suddenly deplatformed reflects a struggle that many other alt-tech social networks face when trying to compete with mainline social media platforms.

Related: How Big Tech uses its stranglehold to stamp out alt-tech competitors

Even when these companies do build alternative platforms, large multi-billion dollar corporations control the infrastructure thats necessary to host content, process payments, distribute apps, and perform other tasks that are essential when running a social network. And these large corporations can pull the plug at any time.

In this instance, CloutHub says its video channels were taken down without warning by IBM.

But large corporations can restrict alt-tech competitors at multiple levels.

Mobile app distribution is controlled by Apple and Google and they can boot alt-tech competitors at any time.

Google Search, Facebook, and YouTube are three of the most five visited sites in the world and can have a huge impact on which alternative social networks are discovered.

And the mega-corporations Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal have a tight grip over online payment processing. All three have previously banned and blacklisted alt-tech platforms and independent creators.
