How to network while working from home: Start with reaching out and contacting folks – USA TODAY

Working from home has exploded since the start of the pandemic. While it might seem temporary, it could become the new normal. Here's why. USA TODAY

Peter Pham has been calling his contacts lately.

He misses whats the best part of attending conferences for him working the room.So in the middle of a pandemic, hes keeping touch the old-fashioned way. By reaching outon the phone.

I randomly dial people, says Pham, the co-founder of tech incubator ScienceInc., who looks to networking to find the next great company to invest inand to attract investors for the companies he works with. Im taking more of an effort to say, 'Hi'and catch up. Without conferences, he cant randomly run into people and do just that.

This year alone, major tech conferences like the Mobile World Congress, Facebook and Google developer meetings, the Code conference and the National Association of Broadcasters meetings were either postponed or canceled. Apples Worldwide Developer Conference, which normally meets in the first week of June, shifted to a digital-only format and will be seen online on June 22.

With employees working at home and the need to find a new job, get ahead in the old one and just stay in touch and top of mind with contacts still there, what are people to do?

We have some ideas for you.

Jeremiah Owyang, an analyst with Kaleido Insights, believes it is actually easier to network digitallythan in-person because you get wider access to so many more people.

At a conference, "you'll shake hands, ask for a business card, and hope to connect later online," he says. "Online, you establish the connection immediately."

To network, he recommends finding out when the next public business meeting or happy hour is presented onlineand request attendance. That will get you in closer to raise your handand get heard. It will also put you into contact with other like-minded individuals who can become potential contacts.

How do you find them? Follow the people you're interested and odds are, they'll mention the meeting in their posts. Additionally, many are listed on Facebook and other social platforms.

Rebecca Leder, a manager at Salesforce and author of an upcoming book on networking called "The Knock Method," says networkers should scour LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter profiles and Google the subject as well before reaching out.

"You have a lot of tools at your fingertips to know about someone," she says. "You can also find out about mutual contacts and interests, which is an ice breaker."

Working remotely can be a tech challenge: Here are some tips

From Apple to Zoom: How to stay connected with your friends with video chats

Its simple logic. Who isnt on Twitter? Who doesnt want to hear back from people after they post? Engage with them, suggests Raj Nijjer, a vice-president with e-commerce platform Yotpo.

Twitter is the best-kept secret in networking, he says. Most people think of LinkedIn first, he says, but on Twitter, beyond the political fighting, people are more themselves and its a great place to meet them, provided its in areas of mutual interest, which for Nijjer is marketing.

How to reach people who seem out of reach? Youre not going to get to Tesla chief Elon Musk or Apple CEO Tim Cook, but down the line, others who work at the company, if theyre posting regularly, are probably willing to engage, says Nijjer. Otherwise theyre speaking in a vacuum.

Leder prefers LinkedIn.But it depends on the industry, she says. Marketing is more vocal on Twitter, but finance might be better for LinkedIn.

For mastering LinkedIn, she suggests having an updated profile with a current description, a photo that looks inviting, and putting out posts often. Like Facebook and Twitter, LinkedIn also lets you throw out your thoughts, offer links to articles, show your latest YouTube video or photograph.

The beauty of LinkedIn, says Owyang, is not just the connection, but it shows the world who you're connected to as well, which can boost your profile.

Jay Grammond, a Princeton, Minnesota-based photographer, suggests going even furtherand gettinginvolved in specialty groups on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. "Find groups that focus on your area of interest/expertise and engage in positive conversations with the people in those groups," he says. "Share your knowledge, and learn from others. Over time, you will likely see that networks will develop.

Both Leder and Owyang are big believers in blogging as a sales tool.

"I post content that attracts people," says Owyang. "I don't want to chase them. A unique video, thoughtful analysis, something that we can discuss."

He has multiple websites, but he always posts to Mediumbecause the website, which is popular with tech insiders, will let you republish your blog post directly there. And because the site is popular, the Medium link carries more weight with Google or SEO, he says, surfacing it for more people online.

Ethereum-based social network Minds now has 2.5 million users – Decrypt

Users in Thailand are losing faith in Twitter after a spate of company updates look to imperil privacy. Now, due to fears over losing anonymity, Thai dissidents are migrating en mass to Ethereum-based platform Minds.

The distributed social networking platformprofessing to protect against data breaches and surveillanceshot to public consciousness as early as 2015, when it gained backing from the anonymous hacktivist group, "Anonymous."

Billed as one of several 'anti-facebook' social networks to spring up in the wake of Facebook's privacy scandals, Minds stands out from the crowd with its crypto-centric approach.

Built upon the Ethereum network, Minds harnesses ERC-20 tokens to reward its community. In turn, users can utilize tokens to promote content or patronize other users' exclusive content.

Now, the platform is finding an entirely new user base. After a mass exodus from Twitter in May, Minds cited as many as 100,000 new Thai users.

Over the years, Twitter has been a bastion for many Thai dissidents rebelling against their country's strict speech laws. While the majority avoid Facebook due to an obligation to use real names, Twitter's acceptance of pseudonymous accounts has kept Thai non-conformists in good relations with the platformuntil now.

Earlier this month Twitter issued a blog post announcing a partnership with the Thai government. Lo and behold, this was followed by an update to Twitter's privacy policy, allowing the platform to share "device-level data" such as IP addresses with business partners. This served as a warning to many Thais, who jumped ship.

However, Minds may not be the flight to safety everyone thinks. Back when the platform first launched in 2015, security consultant Scott Arciszewsk picked apart Mind's encryption protocols, concluding that the platform's provisions were relatively weak.

Additionally, far from a refuge for all, Minds most popular channels are reportedly flooded with hate speech. A similar issue has arisen on another free-speech social network, Gab, where the line between freedom of expression and discrimination is continually crossed.

Nevertheless, for Thai dissidents, the alternatives are either remaining silent or imprisonment. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, Minds might be the only way out.

Facebook takes on Twitter with Venue, a second screen companion for live events – TechCrunch

Facebooks R&D group, NPE Team, is launching a new app for engaging fellow fans around live events, Venue. This is the third new app to launch just this week from Facebooks internal team focused on experimenting with new concepts in social networking. With Venue, the company aims to offer a digital companion for live events, starting with this Sundays NASCAR race.

The new app appears to be a challenge to Twitter, which today serves as the de facto second screen for commenting on live events and engaging with fellow fans. On Twitter, fans often use hashtags to add their commentary to live events that can range from TV show premieres to sports competitions to major political happenings, like live-streamed congressional hearings or the State of the Union presidential address, for example.

Twitters in-house curation team also rounds up the highlights from major events (e.g.), which are quick summaries featuring notable tweets, video clips, photos, comments and more about an event or related news story.

While there are some similarities with Twitter, Facebooks Venue takes a different approach to the second screen.

Instead of having everyone viewing the event constantly chiming in with their own thoughts and reactions, the commentators for a given event hosted in Venue will only include well-known personalities like journalists, current or former athletes, or aspiring fan-analysts. The latter could include popular social media personalities, for example.

These commentators will provide their own takes on the event and pose interactive questions and polls for those watching. The event host may also open up short, constrained chats around specific moments during the event but fan commentary isnt the main focus of the app.

In addition, fans dont stay glued to their phone during the entire event when using Venue. Instead, the app sends out a notification to users when theres a new moment available in the app. These moments arent like Twitters summaries. Theyre one of the short, digital opportunities where fans can participate.

Facebook will first test Venue with NASCARs Food City presents the Supermarket Heroes 500 race on Sunday, May 31, 2020. Social media personality, nascarcasm, will host the in-app venue.

Future NASCAR races will also be hosted in Venue, with commentators includingnascarcasm, FOX Sports NASCAR reporter Alan Cavanna, and NASCAR driver Landon Cassill.

As NASCAR makes its return to action over the coming weeks, Venue will provide users with a unique and exciting way to connect with fellow race fans from around the globe all from the safety and comfort of their own homes, said Tim Clark, NASCAR SVP and Chief Digital Officer, in a statement. NASCAR was built on innovation, and we couldnt be more excited to help a great partner like Facebooks New Product Experimentation team innovate around new platforms, he added.

Facebook believes the new app will give viewers the chance to better engage with live events and fellow fans.

Live broadcasts still offer the rare opportunity for millions of people to consume content simultaneously, Facebook explained in its announcement. Despite drawing large concurrent viewership, live broadcasts are still a mostly solo viewing experience, it noted.

Thats a bit of stretch. Fans certainly engage with one another when chatting about live events on Twitter. And when Twitter streams the video from a live event something Venue doesnt do, by the way Twitter will offer a dedicated space where users can easily see the tweets from fellow viewers. Other live video platforms, including Facebooks own Facebook Live and Instagram Live, also include chat experiences as do YouTube Live and Twitch.

The real difference between Venue and Twitter is that it shifts the balance of power. On Twitter, everyones comments are given equal footing. In Venue, its the expert hosts leading and curating the conversation.

Facebook hasnt announced what future events Venue may host beyond NASCAR but it sounds like it has plans to expand Venue further down the road as it refers to NASCAR as its first sports partner.

The Venue app is live today on iOS and Android.
