Former Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon and potential Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson is under fire for passages included in a 2012 book that appear to be lifted from an anti-socialism website and other sources.

A report by the news site BuzzFeed found sections of the book, "America the Beautiful," were reproduced from a website called Socialismsucks.net that has since been taken offline. Other passages mirrored those written by several conservative historians.

"Alongside the author and literary agent, we take these matters very seriously," a spokesperson for Zondervan, a Christian publisher owned by HarperCollins, said in a statement Wednesday regarding the Carson book. "We will work with Dr. Carson and his agent to review the information and will respond appropriately."

Carson's agent, Sealy Yayes, told the Associated Press that Carson had provided Zondervan with all of his source material and had thought the publisher would make sure the book included adequate attribution.

"America the Beautiful" was co-written by Carson's wife, Candy Carson.

"Certainly, the Carsons were relying on their publisher, as all authors do," Yates said. "It doesn't mean that the author is not responsible, but the Carsons felt they had fully complied will all their responsibility."

The extent of the potential fallout from the report is unclear. At least one of the authors involved told BuzzFeed he granted permission to duplicate up to 10,000 words of his work as long as he was credited, which Carson did in the book's footnotes.

Carson retired from Hopkins in 2013 after a celebrated career in pediatric neurosurgery. Talk of a potential presidential campaign began to swirl after he delivered a fiery address at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington in February. He now lives in Florida.

He has said he will make a decision about whether to seek the GOP nomination by this spring.

The story is similar to a 2013 report from BuzzFeed regarding passages of a book written by Sen. Rand Paul that were copied from a report by a conservative think tank. The sections were updated with more attribution in subsequent printings, according to BuzzFeed.
