Fun for kids, youth and families at 62nd Oak Bay Tea Party – Saanich News

Organizers say there are additional free activities this year, plus new midway thrills

Its promised to be a fun year for kids at the Oak Bay Tea Party at Willows Beach.

Additional free activities and attractions for children have been added to the event list this year. Among them, a Frisbee and hula hoop demo on the beach, a Victoria Symphony petting zoo and the return of the Kids Craft Centre.

The society wanted to have something in place for parents, said Sandy Germain, chair. Because lets face it, most events, if youve got two or three children, can be a little expensive.

On Sunday between noon and 4 p.m., the Victoria Symphony petting zoo allows children to try out different musical instruments. Its meant to be a fun and relaxing way to spark interest in music.

Apart from free activities, there will be the usual midway, a favourite for all ages. Shooting Star Amusements owner Justin Wagner highlighted this years brand new 2024 gondola wheel, the Star Wheel, which holds 40 people. From up there, youll have a beautiful view of the ocean.

Additional fun includes games, carnival food, a duck pond, a kids roller coaster, bouncy castles, zero gravity, bumper cars and a total of 18 rides and attractions.

Not only is there fun for youth, but youth also play a large role in the festival as volunteers including as operators of the Kids Craft Centre.

[Last year], they turned it into an amazing, amazing thing. They had kids making Fathers Day cards, and at the end of the weekend, they let me know everything they wanted for this year, Germain said.

The Girl Guides, who are fundraising for planned trips, have been assisting in the Tea Tent since as long as Germain can remember.

Since Ive been involved, so were talking 27 years.

Then at the bike valet, the same group of students from Glenlyon Norfolk School have been volunteering since they were in Grade 7.

Now theyre graduating this year, Germain said.

On Friday of the festival, four young up-and-coming bands made up of high school students in the area will perform on the stage.

Its good for them an opportunity to be on stage and have an audience, Germain said.

In the annual events 62 years, Germain said historically the main thing for kids was mainly the amusement rides, but this year organizers are being especially intentional about bringing in new activities.

Weve evolved, she said. Its a family community event; its always been geared towards families. We just are seeing ways that we can enhance on whats there for kids.

The 2024 Oak Bay Tea Party runs May 31 to June 2, at Willows Beach. Learn more at oakbayteaparty.com.

Witchmarsh Characters are a Mix of the 1920s, Cryptids, and D&D – GameRant

Highlights

RPG-platformer hybrid Witchmarsh and its prequel Tea Party of the Damned feature one-of-a-kind gameplay in two genres that are not often mashed together. But it's the characters that really stand out, particularly Tea Party of the Damned's mix of private investigators, monstrous allies, and Lovecraftian foes. From the streetwise fire elemental to the chatty can of oysters who claims to be a bewitched human, Witchmarsh and Tea Party of the Damned are filled with characters drawn from a diverse array of literary, gaming, and historical inspirations.

Writer and developer Luciano Sgarbi spoke excitedly to Game Rant about the cast of characters players can expect to meet when Tea Party of the Damned launches in Early Access later this year. He discussed some of their inspirations, including popular cryptids and Dungeons and Dragons monsters, and provided a few hints about the personalities and play styles of just a couple of the game's 12 playable private investigators. The result is a quirky, memorable cast who perfectly suit the bizarre underground dimension they reluctantly inhabit.

Game Rant chats with The Last Spell developers about the new Dwarves of Runenberg DLC and the successful indie game's history.

Tea Party of the Damned kicks off with a group of private investigators having journeyed to Boston for a disastrous job interview. When they are transported to a mystical underworld, they must team up and figure out what is going on before they are trapped in the underground dimension forever. Sgarbi revealed that the game will eventually feature 12 playable private investigators, although only eight will be available at launch. These include the hard-boiled PI, who plays heavily into stereotypes of the classic 1920s and 1930s noir detective, the burly and powerful Moose, the stealthy Trapper, and many more. He even gave a sneak peek at one of the upcoming playable characters, who will be released in a mid-Early Access patch:

The Guardian is...actually the only non-human investigator - she's a woods spirit, kind of like a Dryad, who's disguised herself as a private investigator. And now you have to figure out what her motives are...and why she's joined your investigation.

In addition to the twelve playable characters, the group is accompanied by a talking can of oysters who serves as a guide. He claims to know how to navigate the underworld, and to be a human cursed into his current form due to past debt - but Sgarbi hinted that players shouldn't necessarily take everything their canned friend says at face value. "He's a pretty good, if slightly unreliable guide," Sgarbi revealed. "Slightly untrustworthy."

Also accompanying the player are three monsters associated with the underground speakeasy, a location Sgarbi added to the game to incorporate some 1920s flair. These include a moth man, inspired by the iconic West Virginia-based cryptid, a Dungeons and Dragons-style lich, and a man made of jelly. These "jelly men" also serve as antagonists, and make quite deadly enemies as they are able to transform their tentacles into a variety of weapons. Their tentacled design might bring DND's mind flayers to, well, mind, but they've got many more tricks up their gelatinous sleeves than simply psychic attacks.

Sgarbi revealed that the main Witchmarsh campaign, which he plans to return to once Tea Party of the Damned's Early Access period is complete, will feature "over 300" NPCs for players to interact with, including a mix of both humans and monsters. While Tea Party of the Damned will include fewer characters due to its smaller scale, each and every one promises to be memorable, from the pinstripe suit-clad fire elemental to the speakeasy owner who claims to be the only human around. Players can look forward to discovering this eclectic cast's secrets when Tea Party of the Damned launches in Early Access.

Here’s What Martha Stewart Serves at Her Tea Parties – Better Homes & Gardens

Tea parties are having a moment right nowquite possibly their biggest since they came onto the 19th-century social scene in England.

It could be due to simple trend cycles, but we likely have to credit the newest season of Bridgerton. According to a new trend report from Pinterest, searches for Bridgerton tea party increased by 430% this year. The site also saw increases in searches for "high tea food ideas," "afternoon tea party ideas," and "floral tea party."

People are turning to Pinterest to plan their summer entertaining and social activities, and searches for summer tea parties and themed dinner parties are on the rise, the pinning platform said in a statement. It seems that the new Bridgerton season and creative trending tea recipes and inspiring congregations centered around high tea and floral decor.

If youre hosting tea of your own, you want to foremost think about the food and drink you're going to servetea and sandwiches, obviously. As Martha Stewart put it in a video on CBS, a tea sandwich is that afternoon snack that all of us crave and that not many of us ever really get in our lives.

Stewart recommends preheating your teapot before you steep it, which she does by putting boiling water in the pot and then pouring it out. Then she spoons two tablespoons of loose-leaf teaaccording to her, What a real tea party is all aboutin the pot and pours hot water over the top. After steeping, she serves.

The first thing you put in your cup is the milk, Stewart instructed in the video. Just a little bit. Add the tea, and pour through a little tea strainer if you have one. This catches any of the excess tea leaves.

Stewart described making tea sandwiches as a more complex operation." She starts by ensuring her bread is thinly sliced and your cream cheese is room temperature, which makes it easier to spread. In the first sandwich, she adds the cream cheese, layers on some thinly-sliced cucumbers, and cuts the crusts off.

You dont want crusts in tea sandwiches, she declares. Inappropriate.

She walked viewers through how she makes two more tea party-worthy sandwiches: a fancier one with dark bread, shrimp salad, and caviar; the other with asparagus and a spread of cream cheese on thinly-sliced white bread. She boiled the asparagus in salted water, put it on top of the cream cheese, and added some lemon zest, before finishing it off with the top slice of bread and cutting the crusts off.

If you're going to a tea party at the Stewart residence, you'll find yourself seated in a garden in the middle of a double row of lilacsbut don't worry if you dont have that kind of atmosphere. Just set up a low table in your most lush outdoor location, and provide cushions for seating.

Stewart's table itself consisted of a simple tablecloth, china, and sitting pads.Oh, with a little twist: Its not necessary that youre joined by an exotic bird at your tea party, but at least one of Stewarts 15 peacocks will be a guest at hers, of course.
