Mothers Day tea party – WIVT – NewsChannel 34

BINGHAMTON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) Mothers Day is on Sunday the 15th, and the Mercy House of the Southern Tier is gearing up for it by honoring a founding member of the organization.

This Sunday will be Mercy Houses second annual Mothers Day Tea celebration.

The event is one of the biggest fundraisers for Mercy House and celebrates the legacy of the late Cheryl Monachino.

Cheryl was diagnosed with terminal cancer at 59 while she was the president of board and spent her final days at the Mercy House.

Executive Director of the Mercy House of the Southern Tier, Linda Cerra says, She loved tea, so what better way then to honor her with this. To a whole different level though. So, we have 326 attendees that will join us on Sunday from two to five. So, we dress up, we wear the hats or the fascinators that go into the hair and its just fun and something different to do.

The event features a high tea menu, with champagne, hors doeuvres, scones, petite sandwiches and desserts all served family-style.

There will be several raffle baskets, childrens activities for the kids, music, and a wine pull.

Their goal was 300 attendees, and Cerra says they sold out last week.

George Washington speaks at the 250th Boston Tea Party event – The Jolt News

Shirley Stirling

By Shirley Stirling

George Washington recently spoke at South Union Grange. Who better to lead a celebration of the 250th anniversary (1773-2023) of the Boston Tea Party than the father of his country? And what better city as a venue than Olympia, the capital of the only state named for a U.S. president?

On Friday, April 21, 2023, Beverly York and friends celebrated the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party with a public event. It was held in Tumwater's South Union Grange #860 and attracted 145 people, primarily families with children. They enjoyed berry/fruit tea; froggers, a colonial ginger/molassescookie;sugar biscuits with nutmeg; and several activities.

General George Washington (Vernon Frykholm) spoke about the Boston Tea Party and also about the general's garden (he had four). The Grange is an association that advocates for agriculture and rural America and so the gardens were an apt topic for the venue.

The Boston Tea Party was a protest against high taxation by the British government. Following are three facts about the Boston Tea Party:

As a farmer, General Washington worked constantly to develop better agricultural practices.Georgewas one of our nations first "Master Gardeners."Apart from his military and political career, George Washington was considered one of the most innovative farmers of his time.

Here are some of his most important agricultural achievements:

Washington's agricultural achievements helped to establish the U.S. as a major agricultural power. His innovative farming techniques and commitment to sustainable agriculture continue to influence farmers and researchers today.

Before, after and between the two lectures, children and adults participated in various activities: weaving small baskets, sewing 4-patch quilts, playing games, cursive, and coloring.

Connie Barclay taught basket weaving for industrious visitors to weave a small basket to take home.

Quilter and Grange member Diane Williams helped attendees sew their own four-patch quilt with batting and backing.

Alice Swidecki led a Spencer Cursive mini-workshop, with parchment of the Declaration of Independence as a backdrop. Spencerian penmanship, based on Copperplate script, was developed in New York in 1840 by Platt Rogers Spencer. It was, in part, a rebellion against the cramped British script, uniquely American, and became the standard for handwriting in the U.S. It remained popular until the early 1900s when the more basic Palmer method gained favor.

Sherry Stacy read, "If You Lived in Colonial Times," a children's book. Sherry is a published author and retired teacher. She has been a leader in the homeschool community for decades.

Well-known as a Northwest reenactor, Vern has portrayed George Washington since 2012, giving over 500 portrayals to more than 25,000 people.

He has talked to students at schools, clubs, libraries, business groups, churches, and regional/national conferences. He appeared at the George Washington Inn, between Sequim and Port Angeles for the annual Lavender Festival in for 10 years and the annual Northwest Colonial Festival for 7 years. During the Covid-19 crisis, he responded by Zooming into classrooms and meetings. He also developed educational videos online. His website, http://georgewashingtonspeaks.com, YouTube channel, and Facebook page offer more than 80 educational videos.

York invited each person and family at the event to pose for a photo with the "real" George Washington and it proved to be a popular activity!

Beverly York holds the office of Lecturer at the South Union Grange. This event was a joint venture of the SouthUnionGrange#860, Daughters of the American Colonists, and Daughters of the American Revolution.

40 Best Afternoon Tea Recipes – What To Make For A Tea Party – Delish

With King Charles coronation happening this year, it makes sense weve all got a little British fever? Excitement? Certainly a healthy dose of curiosity from afar. Looking for a fun and easy way to dip your toes into British tradition? Throw an afternoon tea, full of adorable pastries, delicious salads, and savory treats. Check out our 40 afternoon tea recipes, then put the kettle on, pull out your nicest plates, and get ready to feel extra posh.

Afternoon tea can mean different things to different people, but some tenets we think are important are having a good mix of sweet and savory items, serving things on special dishes, and, of course, the tea! While were all for a solid cup of Earl Grey or oolong, weve also included some recipes here for if you want to shake things up. Our Thai iced tea, our kombucha, or our Arnold Palmer are fun tea-adjacent drinks perfect for adding pizzazz to your spread (theyre good for winning over tea-haters too!).

Speaking of switching things up, lets talk etiquette. For many people, afternoon tea is a time to behave a bit fancier than usual, and there are many rules you can follow if youd like to do the same, including holding your teacup (pinkies out!) to folding and unfolding your napkin in a particular ways. Were all for tradition, but are also very into making things our own. If stirring your cup without touching the sides excites you, go for it! Otherwise, feel free to enjoy other aspects of an afternoon tea, like the FOOD.

Lets start with the savory options, which per tradition should be eaten first. Weve included recipes for our deviled eggs, our flaky sausage rolls, or our Scotch eggs, as well as our classic chicken salad, our best egg salad, and our coronation chicken salad that are perfect for turning into lettuce cups or finger sandwiches (cut those crusts off!).

Next course should be sconesweve got a recipe here for our favorite versatile scones that can swing sweet or savory, as well as some shortcakes like our Bisquick strawberry shortcake biscuits and our lemon blueberry shortcakes. Serving scones with clotted cream is traditional, but weve also included some of our other fave add-ons, like homemade whipped cream, garlic butter, lemon curd, or fig jam. A little variety is nice, so have fun with it.

The final (and best!) course is the sweets! Bite-size versions of all your favorites can make an appearance here. Check out our petit fours (made with Funfetti cake!), our French macarons, our rhubarb cake (or traybake, in the UK), or our amaretti cookies for ideas, but really, anything goes. All your favorite cookies, cakes, and mini desserts can make an appearance here, so make your afternoon tea your own.

The Ritter Public Library, 5680 Liberty Ave., is prepared to serve up some royal treatment as it hosts a royal Tea Party event May 6 in conjunction with the coronation of King Charles III of England.

The tea is organized by Friends of the Ritter Public Library.

What to know about King Charles IIIs coronation

The cost to attend is $30 a person and guarantees that guests have access to a selection of formal teas and light tea refreshments, Browne said.

"The tea was a great idea because it not only is a fundraiser for Friends but also provides guests with a chance to dress up and get fancy as well," she said. "We are encouraging guests to come dressed up and to just take the time to get fancy."

The event is geared toward adults, but all are welcome to attend.

Doors will open at 1 p.m. and will continue until the coronation concludes.

Due to the time difference, the coronation will not be viewed live.

"Our Friends have always been great supporters for the library," Browne said. "They make it possible for the various events that we hold as well as are responsible for the ongoing book sales."

The Steubenville Public Library will be celebrating the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday with a tea party.

The party will not only feature both raspberry champagne tea and finger cucumber sandwiches.

A livestream of the event from Westminster Abbey will also be shown.

"It's one of those once in a lifetime type of experiences, Sarita Asawa, the librarys community outreach coordinator, said. I mean, the queen was alive for a very long time, so this is something that a lot of us grew up hearing about.

"So, being able to watch this shift in history and celebrating it at the library is so fun."

There are still some spots available, for those who'd like to attend.
