Tea party cash boost for charity

A TEAM of Hampshire women have been rallying to raise millions with copious amounts of tea and cake.

Jo Sellers is a businesswoman based in Alresford who is determined to help people with breast cancer.

So she joined the regional campaign which was launched this week by The Haven in Wessex to take part in their 1 million Tea Party.

With the help of her colleagues at Sellers PR Jo invited businesses near her offices in Bishops Sutton to take part in the mission which will see a new respite centre built in Hampshire.

From a teapot-shaped cake with matching cup and saucer to traditional vintage crockery and endless servings of Earl Grey, Jo thought of everything to encourage donations and so far she has raised more than 600.

She said: It was an amazing event and everyone was so supportive. The Haven already has centres in other parts of the UK and from what the women who have stayed there have told me it really makes a difference to their recovery process.

The beauty of this campaign is that there will be hundreds of tea parties going on that we dont know about but they are all helping.

IT was time for tea across Hampshire as teapots brewed to help make a stand against breast cancer.

Hundreds of people have joined celebrities such as Sally Taylor and actress Sarah Parish to raise their bone china for The Haven Wessex 1 Million Tea Party.

The week-long event, which ends on Monday, is helping to raise funds needed for a specialist breast cancer centre set to open in Titchfield this autumn, which will provide free support to anyone affected by the devastating disease.

From builders dedicating their treasured tea breaks to the good cause, to bus drivers and groups of friends who used it as a great excuse to catch up, the money has been rolling in to help the charity hit its 1.7m target to refurbish the building.

Those taking part included James Judd and Dan Carpenter, from Three Valley Construction, who had a cuppa in between their work at the site of the cancer centre.

Others getting involved included bus drivers at First Bus Southampton and 20-year-old cancer survivor Olivia Buckland, who hosted her tea party at Hill Head Sailing Club, in Fareham.

While Julia Mitchell, a member of the charitys fundraising committee, went vintage for her party, which saw 40 of her friends descend on her home in Shawford to enjoy tea and cakes.

Tea party-backed Texas lawmaker wants marijuana legalized

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -

A tea party-backed Texas state lawmaker has filed a bill to fully legalize marijuana, seeking to strike any prohibition of it from state statute.

Republican state Rep. David Simpson of Longview filed his proposal late Monday. In a statement, he said he seeks to "reframe the current marijuana discussion."

Simpson has long championed top libertarian causes but supports legalizing marijuana because of his devout Christian beliefs. In his words, "God did not make a mistake when he made marijuana that the government needs to fix."

Unlike some states, Texas hasn't moved to ease restrictions on marijuana even for medical reasons. That makes it hard to imagine Simpson's plan gaining traction.

Still, he argues it should be utilized for medical reasons, to produce fiber "or simply for beauty and enjoyment."
