Fairfax tea party steeped in tradition and literature

Mila Whyte, 2, was a model of decorum at a public tea party in Fairfax on Sunday, but when the Queen of Hearts blew in complete with fire-engine-red hoopskirt, matching hair and attitude, a shriek escaped Whyte's lips.

As the queen swept between the tables at the sold-out English Tea Party at the Fairfax Women's Club, more than 80 adults and children oohed and aahed between bites of scones, cake and salmon sandwiches. The event was a benefit for Fairfax Parks and Recreation.

Along with the refreshments, the event included a performance by the Fairfax Theatre Company featuring the aforementioned Red Queen, the Mad Hatter, the Dormouse and other Alice in Wonderland characters.

Earlier, Mila, the 2-year-old Fairfax resident, introduced herself with aplomb to all. "I'm Mila and this is my mom Jennifer. What's your name?"

Similarly, Anya Mason and her BFF Maisy Schwartz, both 10 years old and Fairfax residents, were the soul of good manners.

"I think it's awesome," Mason said of the tea party, her first according to grandmother Anya Schandler.

The participants sat at nine tables resplendent with three kinds of jam, raspberry, apricot and strawberry, china plates and, of course, teapots steaming with herb tea. In the manner one could only expect of Marin, the tea sandwiches were made with whole wheat bread.

SWOTY nominees take tea for charity

FINALISTS for the Evening Times Scotswoman of the Year 2014 got together for a tea party with a difference.

Parkinson's Disease champion Maria Righetti, Clydeside Action on Asbestos chairperson Phyllis Craig and mental health campaigner Laura Nolan, joined editor Tony Carlin and invited guests at the informal event, hosted by event sponsor St Enoch Centre.

The three women are contenders for the prestigious title, alongside First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, anti-sectarianism activist Cara Henderson and Paralympic sprinter Libby Clegg.

The winner will be announced at a glittering dinner in Glasgow City Chambers on Thursday.

At the St Enoch tea party, held in the shopping centre's exhibition unit dedicated to all the previous winners of the award, the women were entertained by singer and musician Hannah Jackson, drank tea from vintage china and enjoyed fizz and luxury chocolates.

It was also an opportunity to meet each other for the first time.

Maria Righetti, who has campaigned tirelessly to raise funds for and awareness of Parkinson's Disease after her husband was diagnosed with the condition in his 30s, said: "It's been lovely to break the ice ahead of Thursday's event and to read all about the previous winners of SWOTY - they are such incredible women."

Phyllis Craig, who campaigns for the rights of people affected by asbestos poisoning, agreed: "It's very humbling to even be considered alongside these women. It's such an honour to be nominated for SWOTY and we're all looking forward to Thursday's event."

After the loss of her son to suicide, Laura Nolan set up the Joshua Nolan Foundation to provide counselling for troubled young people and bereaved families. She added: "It's lovely to meet everyone and hear their stories and I'm really grateful for the opportunity to be involved in such a wonderful event."

Cafe chain Boston Tea Party nominated for three awards

A MIDLANDS and South West cafe chain, with a branch in Worcester, has been nominated for a sustainability award thanks to its innovative project turning used coffee grounds into fresh oyster mushrooms which it then serves up to its customers.

The Boston Tea Party (BTP), with 15 cafes across the Midlands and South West of England, is in line for the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) Innovation award for 2015.

For the past few months BTP has been working with a social enterprise project called Green Shoots based at HMP Dartmoor. The project aims to help rehabilitate inmates through a programme of growing delicious oyster mushrooms using coffee grounds from BTP cafes in Bristol.

The mushrooms have made their debut at BTPs Gloucester Road cafe, in Bristol, and hopefully will be rolled out to our other cafes in the future.

A spokesman for the cafe chain said: Were incredibly proud that this association ticks many of those Boston boxes top quality ingredients, waste reduction and commitment to social responsibility. Its a delicious, virtuous circle!

BTPO has also been nominated in two other categories in this years SRA awards the Society award for its societal initiatives such as community engagement, treating people fairly, healthy eating and responsible marketing and the Large Group award.

The Large Group award recognises a business with a large number of outlets which has been most successful in the SRAs 14 key areas of sustainability Water saving, workplace resources, supply chain, waste management, energy efficiency, environmentally positive farming, local and seasonal, sustainable fish, ethical meat and dairy, fair trade, community engagement, treating people fairly, healthy eating and responsible marketing.

Deena Horne, general manager of the Worcester BTP in Angel Place, said: Were delighted to have been nominated for three SRA awards! We take our ethics very seriously and it plays a big part in what we do.

Our customers really value that our products are ethically sourced and they are often commented on as there arent many restaurants where you get free range sausages and bacon in Worcester. Its great to have been recognised for our commitment to this and other areas of sustainability.

The award winners will be announced on Monday February 23 at a ceremony being held in Oval Space, Bethnal Green, London.
