House Speaker Beth Harwell, R-Nashville, talks to a House member as the 108th General Assembly is reconvened Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, in Nashville.
NASHVILLE -- Traditionally an insider's affair, the contest for the Tennessee state House's most powerful post -- the speakership -- has been anything but that this year.
With Rep. Rick Womick, R-Rockvale, challenging Republican Speaker Beth Harwell in Wednesday's GOP Caucus election, various tea party groups, anti-Common Core activists and the Tennessee Firearms Association have been bombarding Republican representatives with emails and phone calls in support of Womick.
Just last week, the Tennessee Republican Assembly and the heads of the Chattanooga and Nashville tea parties entered the fray, praising Womick as a "true patriot" and "true conservative" and arguing that his elevation to speaker "would further the true intention of Tennessee voters as expressed in the recent elections."
"The Coalition believes that this level of support should be reflected by a Speaker as conservative as the voters who have made this possible," the group said in its news release.
Efforts to reach Chattanooga Tea Party President Mark West on Monday were unsuccessful.
Harwell is seen as having the upper hand in the 73-member GOP Caucus contest as she seeks a third two-year term. Since Democrats have only 26 seats, the real race is among Republicans.
Womick helped lead a House rebellion last legislative session against Common Core standards and has denounced Republican Gov. Bill Haslam as a "self-serving autocrat."
The sometimes-fiery Womick also has attacked now-departing Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman. And he has accused Haslam's chief of staff, Mark Cate, of having tried unsuccessfully to recruit GOP candidates to run against him in his House district primary last summer.
"That is totally crazy," Cate said in an interview. "I had no involvement at all. This is crazy. I have no idea why he's picked us out, but it's totally untrue."

Tea party seeks to crash Tennessee House speaker race

With Jonathan Gruber, the ObamaCare architect and Democratic Party hero turned pariah testifying before Congress, conservative groups are hoping for fireworks. One activist group, Tea Party Patriots, is ready to remind everyone why hes there.
TPP is passing out shirts with Grubers likeness under the words Im With Stupid and each of the Is is an arrow point toward the MITprofessor.
Gruber rose to national prominence when multiple videos surfaced of President Barack Obamas adviser accusing the American people of being stupid when it comes to health care and economic issues, including issues specific to them.
Tea Party Patriots co-founder Jenny Beth Martin told The Daily Caller, With all thats going on in the Capitol, we didnt want Mr. Grubers curtain call to go unnoticed. We commemorated his appearance, and in the spirit of the Season, wed like to offer the Obamacare architect a dozen. He can use them as stocking stuffers for the economically unsophisticated.
The group is handing out 250 shirts all around Capitol Hill, mostly on the House side. One place to watch are near the Capitol South Metro stop, but anywhere people who might be attending the hearing will be walking is fair game.
You can see what they look like below, theyll be handing them out starting at 8:00 a.m. and go until theyre gone.

A professor at South Texas College in Weslaco was captured on video explaining to his students some of the perceived similarities between modern day tea party members and 1930s-era Nazis in Germany and then imploring them to not tell anyone outside the classroom of his comparison.
He said to the students not to tell anybody about his comments, apparently not realizing that one of his students had started filming right after he called Sen. Ted Cruz an [expletive for fatherless child] for using his last name to help win his election, The Blaze reported.
The student who filmed the professor said his name was Blake Armstrong.
He said on video: In 1931, which was really interesting, the Nazis people were kind of tired of them. Theyve been around since 1920, 11 years now. Theyve won seats theyre like the tea party! Thats such a good example. Dont tell anybody I said that though.
The professor then drew comparisons between how both parties rose to power and how they were both later regarded as radical.
But in the sense of how they politically came to power, theres a good analogy there, he said, The Blaze reported. That eventually, people realized, Oh these Nazis are a bunch of nuts [and] these tea party people are a bunch of nuts. I mean, the analogy really is a good analogy.
The student, who requested anonymity, told The Blaze that he recorded his professor and uploaded the video to YouTube because its wrong for thin to use his position as a soap box for his beliefs, especially with young, impressionable students. This semester, [the professor] insulted Republicans about three times before this video was recorded.
