Kansas U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts won a big tea party endorsement Tuesday from a group that had backed his primary challenger, providing a boost for the three-term Republican on a day his embattled campaign also got a visit from Kentucky U.S. Sen. Rand Paul.
As the unexpectedly competitive race entered its final week, the endorsement from the Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund signaled some conservatives once determined to oust the 78-year-old senator may now be accepting him as a more palatable option than independent Greg Orman, a political unknown.
The group previously endorsed Roberts' GOP challenger, Milton Wolf, and called the incumbent "a desperate career politician."
Paul told a crowd of about 200 people at a Wichita airport hangar that Orman could help Democrats. Numerous Republican dignitaries, including several on past presidential tickets, have made the same argument on Roberts' behalf.
"How could you even consider voting for someone who would support President Obama's agenda or (Democratic Majority Leader) Harry Reid?" said Paul, who has strong tea party support and is weighing a presidential run. "You have to come together. We've been counting on you, Kansas. You're a Republican state, for goodness sakes!"
Tea Party Patriots are among the biggest national tea party groups, though there are hundreds throughout the country that operate locally. Larger conservative groups such as Tea Party Express, which also backed Wolf but switched to Roberts this month, have sought to influence congressional primaries this year with little success.
The GOP needs six seats to gain control of the Senate, and was not expecting to defend Roberts' in typically GOP-heavy Kansas. Orman, a 45-year-old who briefly sought the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in 2008, describes himself as "fiscally conservative and socially tolerant," but has declined to say with which party he will affiliate, if elected.
Orman kept a relatively low profile Tuesday, spending much of the day in private, small-group events.
"No matter how many national politicians Senator Roberts brings to Kansas, Kansans know that Washington is broken and Senator Roberts is part of the problem there," Orman campaign manager Jim Jonas said in a written statement.
To underscore Kansas' unfamiliar role as a swing state, Paul recalled last visiting Kansas with his family in 1976, when the Republican National Convention held was held in Kansas City, Missouri, and his family spent time in nearby Overland Park, Kansas.

A new band of combative conservatives is likely to win House seats next week, posing a fresh challenge for Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) and his leadership team as they seek to govern an expanded GOP majority next year.
Six to eight new lawmakers are likely to replace incumbent Republicans in deep-red districts, primarily in the South. Most of them, such as Gary Palmer of Alabama and John Ratcliffe of Texas, are backed by the tea party movement and will be more likely than their predecessors to oppose GOP leaders on key legislation.
Other Republican wins are expected in blue states such as California, Florida, Illinois and New York, where voters take a dimmer view of the tea-party-style politics that has dominated the House in recent years. New lawmakers from those areas are more likely to temper their partisanship ahead of the 2016 elections, when congressional Democrats are expected to fare better.
Overall, party leaders and election forecasters generally agree that the GOP will add eight to 10 seats to its 234-seat majority in the House. The party also stands a good chance of seizing control of the Democratic-run Senate.
Republicans are going to gain seats we just dont know how many yet, even this close to Election Day, said Nathan Gonzales, deputy editor of the nonpartisan Rothenberg Political Report, which closely tracks congressional races.
Part of the uncertainty in the House stems from the enormous cash advantage amassed by Democrats in recent months that has allowed endangered incumbents to keep pace with an influx of attack ads paid for by Republicans or GOP-leaning super PACs.
Even so, Gonzales said, Democrats might have a problem this cycle that money cant fix.
GOP leaders launched a Drive to 245 fundraising campaign last spring in hopes of winning the largest House majority in modern history. Some Republicans privately predicted that they could snatch 25 new seats.
Democrats, meanwhile, would need at least 17 seats to retake control. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said in a Washington Post interview this summer that she wanted to pick up 25 seats.
Both sides now admit that they will probably come up short.

The Tea Party Express has officially endorsed Republican Scott Brown for U.S. Senate in New Hampshire.
The nations largest Tea Party political action committee endorsed Brown in 2010, when he ran for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts, which it called the first major victory of the Tea Party movement.
Tea Party Express Executive Director Taylor Budowich said his organization supported Brown in Massachusetts because of his commitment to oppose the Affordable Care Act.
Repealing Obamacare is part of the mission statement for the Tea Party Express, which is based in Sacramento, Calif.
Budowich echoed Browns campaign comments that U.S. Jeanne Shaheen, D-NH, voted with President Obama 99 percent of the time. In announcing the endorsement, he called Brown an independent conservative would work to limit growth of the federal government.
The New Hampshire Tea Party Coalition, as a group, does not endorse any candidates.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -
The Jefferson Area Tea Party is calling for the immediate removal of Charlottesville's voter registrar exactly one week before Election Day.
Charlottesville Registrar Sheri Iachetta and former member of the city's electoral board Bettye Stephanie Commander are currently facing felony embezzlement charges stemming from city-paid cellphone bills. The Tea Party says it cannot expect lawful, accurate elections from someone suspected of embezzlement.
NBC29 reached out to both Iachetta and members of the electoral board, but Iachetta did not return our call and an electoral board member did not want to comment.
Jefferson Area Tea Party Press Release
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- The Jefferson Area Tea Party released a statement today demanding the Charlottesville Electoral Board replace the City Registrar immediately. JATP Chairman, Mike Basile, said "Although we assume Ms. Iachetta's innocence, it is absolutely unacceptable for a Registrar indicted for felony embezzlement to oversee an election.
We cannot expect lawful, accurate elections if the person in charge of them is suspected of embezzlement, is careless with official receipts and documents, and failed to disclose these vitally relevant behaviors. We have all been deceived in this matter, including the Electoral Board. Only the Electoral Board can ensure the Registrar is capable of executing fair and accurate elections in accordance with state law. We must ensure the integrity of our elections. The Jefferson Area Tea Party will support the Electoral Board in any way possible to replace the Registrar and finish preparation for the November 4elections.
According to their website, The Electoral Board of the City of Charlottesville is appointed by Charlottesville Circuit Court Judges and is charged with conducting elections in Charlottesville and certifying the results. The Daily Progress quoted former city manager Gary O'Connell, "... the registrar serves at the pleasure of the board. The board has the sole authority to hire, fire and make decisions." Yet, the Electoral Board has chosen to take no action until after the election. Similarly, the Charlottesville General District Court has done the same by continuing the felony charge hearing against the Registrar until after the election. We have an election in less than a week, accountability matters right now.
