Tea partyers toe GOP line and back moderates for Senate

Tea Party Patriots and Tea Party Express members say its more important to win the Senate than elect hardcore conservatives, and they have put out the word: Moderates like Sen. Pat Roberts and Sen. Scott Brown have their support.

In addition to backing Mr. Roberts hardly the love of tea partyers TPE is also pushing South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds for Senate, The Hill reported.

Its a hold their nose and vote attitude thats taken root, and its based on the growing awareness among tea party types that a moderate win is better than none at all, said FreedomWorks Executive Vice President Adam Brandon, The Hill reported.

That sentiment is echoed by TPP president Jenny Beth Martin.

Our members have told us that right now, having a Republican-controlled Senate and firing [Majority Leader] Harry Reid are their top priority, she said, The Hill reported.

The new attitude is a near 180-degree turn from what brought the tea party into full legislative force in the 2010 elections. Then the mantra was all about sticking by principle, regardless of ensuing GOP loss. And it comes on the heels of the latest primary fight where tea party groups failed to win any key battles.

In 2010, we thought it was very important to get peoples attention and so we had to make that statement and challenge the establishment, said TPE founder Sal Russo, The Hill reported. [But] 2014 was the time to take back the Senate it wasnt a time to purify the party.

The concessions also come on the heels of several Republican Party fixtures, like talking head Karl Rove and Sen. Mitch McConnell, declaring that tea party influence is harmful to the GOP a rift thats hardly been repaired in recent months.

Conservatives didnt take out a hatchet. Mitch McConnell and the establishment Republicans did, said Ken Cuccinelli, the president of the Senate Conservatives Fund, a group that has yet to jump on the moderate-moving bandwagon of the tea party groups, The Hill reported. There is no evidence they have buried that hatchet, and the grassroots is very, very aware of the establishment-induced rift in the party.

Local Tea Party hosts 'true debate' for District 4 seat

Candidates Ken Cornell, left, and John Martin acknowledge the crowd before the Gainesville Tea Party Debate for County Commission District 4 on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014 in Gainesville, Fla.

The Gainesville Tea Party held what Vice President Rod Gonzalez called a true debate between Alachua County Commission District 4 candidates Ken Cornell and John Martin on Tuesday evening.

The local Tea Party hosted the debate at Countryside Baptist Church, where Cornell, a Democrat, and Martin, a Republican, fielded questions on the proposed transportation sales tax referendum and other issues.

The debate format gave Cornell and Martin multiple chances for rebuttal on each question, although Cornell often declined his opportunities to do so.

The debate's first question tackled the Moving Alachua County Forward referendum, which would institute an eight-year, one-cent sales tax to fund various transportation projects if voters approve it in November.

Martin said he does not trust the current County Commission and has consistently opposed the sales tax.

The pot hole's probably deeper than what the county can afford with general fund revenue, he said, but that's because the County Commission hasn't put enough funding toward the roads for years.

If the referendum does pass, Martin said they'll need him on the board to make sure the commissioners do what they say they're going to with the money.

Cornell told the audience of about 65 people that it makes sense to ask for permission and support from the public to tax themselves.

The problem with taxes is they're not used the way they're supposed to be used, Cornell said.

Thom Tillis Senate bid imperiled by tea party toll-road disdain

CHARLOTTE They spoke one after another at a tea party meeting at an upscale pub conservative voters and activists vowing to derail Republican Thom Tillis run for U.S. Senate because, as state House speaker, he muscled through a toll road project.

Since the creation of the automobile until this point, there [havent] been toll roads [in North Carolina], conservative activist Chuck Suter said at the meeting, which is an offshoot of the Charlotte Tea Party. We would expect this to come from Democrats.

I dont want to send him to D.C, fumed Mary Amstrong, a businesswoman and Republican voter who regularly attends the weekly meeting at the Dilworth Neighborhood Grille. Based on what [Mr. Tillis] is doing to us in North Carolina, I dont want to give him any more power.

The anti-toll road uprising that is frustrating Mr. Tillis run reflects a national movement against tolls, which conservatives decry as the latest big government intrusion. Unfortunately for Mr. Tillis, the uprising in North Carolina is centered in bedroom communities in the Lake Norman region north of Charlotte that includes Mr. Tillis base of support in his state House district.

Mr. Tillis has largely ignored the toll road issue and the tea party activists that oppose him. His campaign strategy has consisted of adopting moderate positions and flooding the radio and TV airwaves with ads that tie incumbent Democrat Kay R. Hagan to President Obama, who is extremely unpopular in the Tar Heel State.

But the backlash highlights Mr. Tillis weakness with the Republican base and helps explain why he consistently trails in the polls behind Mrs. Hagan, who was supposed to be one of the most vulnerable Senate Democrats this year.

With two weeks until the election, Mrs. Hagan led Mr. Tills 47 percent to 44 percent in a Public Policy Polling survey this week. The 3-point lead was within the polls margin of error, but nearly every poll for the last two months has put Mrs. Hagan in front. Mrs. Hagan leads Mr. Tillis by the same 3-point margin with or without Libertarian Sean Haugh in the matchup, a sign that his role as a potential spoiler is diminishing.

The consensus at the meeting was that they didnt care if defeating Mr. Tillis sent Mrs. Hagan back to Washington and foiled Senate Republicans quest for a net gain of six seats to seize majority control of the upper chamber this year.
