The North County based Tri-City Tea Party is urging followers vote for Democratic Rep. Scott Peters in the bruising 52nd Congressional District election over GOP challenger Carl DeMaio.
Its recommendation comes as the Peters campaign and its supporters continue to portray the openly gay DeMaio as a tea party acolyte who will back its agenda if elected to Congress.
The tea partys reasons for backing Peters, however, have little to do with each mans positions.
Strategical tactical voting DeMaio will actually do more damage to the GOP platform than will Peters, the organization said about its rationale for the recommendation.
The group, which backs Republicans in nearly all of its ballot recommendations, is also is refusing to endorse Vista GOP Rep. Darrell Issa in his race against Democrat Dave Peiser. It notes that Issa voted to raise the debt ceiling while 199 other House Republicans opposed doing so.
The Republican Party and House Speaker John Boehners backing of DeMaio also has drawn the ire of the Family Research Council and National Organization for Marriage, which calls DeMaio antithetical to the Republican platform.
The Republican Party of San Diego County commissioned a recent poll that claims likely voters in the 52nd Congressional District are more enthusiastic about supporting its candidates than those from the Democratic Party.
The poll of 400 likely voters conducted by John Nienstedts Competitive Edge Research & Communication contends a 16-point enthusiasm advantage for a generic Republican candidate over a generic Democrat.
County Registrar Michael Vu says election workers have wrapped up sending out more than 850,000 mail ballots in advance of the Nov. 4 general election.
