U.S. Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Fowler/Hutchinson, is going to honor his commitment to speak at 6 p.m. Tuesday at a Hutchinson tea party gathering, despite his opponents protest, according to a statement from the Huelskamp campaign.
Democratic candidate Jim Sherow, Manhattan, called on Huelskamp to refuse to speak at the event at the Ramada Hotel and Conference Center, 1400 North Lorraine, after The Hill in Washington, D.C., reported demands Kansas tea party activists had presented to Kansas Republican campaigns.
The demands included calling for Gov. Sam Brownback to intervene to dismiss an ethics investigation into Dr. Milton Wolf, the tea party-supported candidate who lost the Republican Senate primary. Another demand was to remove a supporter of primary election winner Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Dodge City, from the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts, according to The Hill.
This is the kind of political infighting that has left our districts real needs entirely unrepresented, Sherow said in a press release. It is completely unacceptable to publicly support those who are subverting the democratic process with demands wholly unrelated to the issues, he said.
Huelskamps campaign said he will speak about his efforts for veterans and to reduce the national debt and repeal Obamacare.
The Congressman will be sure to share with those in attendance that Mr. Sherow would prefer their elected representatives not meet with them and listen to their concerns simply because of one article published more than a thousand miles away in Washington, the release said.
Sherow and Huelskamp are scheduled to appear at a forum at 8 p.m. Tuesday, on the Kansas Wesleyan University campus, Salina.
