Coulter swings right into humor

Friday the 13th was a lucky day for area conservatives.

Ann Coulter, the queen of right-wing media, gave a diatribe against liberalism, gun control and U.S. immigration policy Friday night at Grand Wayne Center.

She said Republicans are the party of the middle class, were the party of the people, were the populist party, not the very, very rich and not the welfare recipients, unless theyre at least native born.

Coulter, 51, said proposals before Congress that would grant a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants only screw low-wage workers, especially black Americans. Republicans have always stood with black people, and they should do it again on amnesty.

More than 700 people attended the half-hour speech by the commentator and author. Tickets ranged from $25 to $150 for those who dined with Coulter before the program. Beer and wine were sold in the back of the hall.

Much of Coulters address was a stand-up comedy routine. Heres a sampling of her partisan humor:

On President Barack Obamas likability: People think hed be a good next-door neighbor, Coulter said, except for the Chinese, because then hed always be over borrowing something.

The White House photo of Obama shooting skeet marked the first time a black man has been shown a picture of himself holding a gun and said, No, thats really me, thats not Photoshopped.

On claims that homeowners are more likely to die in gun incidents involving their own weapons: The principal way people are killed with their owns guns is suicide, it turns out. Im pretty certain Im not going to commit suicide. And if I were, I would definitely use carbon monoxide to contribute to global warming.

On U.S. immigration laws: Our immigration policy is anyone who lives within walking distance.

Controversial commentator comes to FW

Fort Wayne, Ind. (WANE) - - Hundreds of people packed the Grand Wayne Center to hear Ann Coulter speak Friday evening.

The conservative political commentator spoke to a group of people about the current state of politics in the country.

Even though the hot topic right now is Syria, Coulter only touched on it briefly. She said she didn't believe a Democrat should be Commander in Chief.

However, she spent more of her time talking about immigration reform, gun amnesty, gay marriage, and healthcare.

After she spoke, Coulter took questions from the audience, who traveled from all over Indiana to hear the speech.

One of the audience members asked Coulter if she thought the Republican Party would get back to how it was during the Reagan Administration.

She answered by saying the next GOP presidential candidate needs to be a senator or governor who has had experience winning a large election. She even said Governor Mike Pence could be a contender.

"I would say a governor or senator from a very large state, so who does that leave us with, well there's your governor," Coulter said.

The large majority of people there supported Coulter and her views and said she gave a good show.

"I'm kind of torn on the gay marriage and abortion issues," said Nancy Cronin, who came to the speech. "I'm kind of on both sides, but it's good to hear her side and what everybody else thinks."
