3 Stocks Near 52-Week Lows Worth Buying

Just as we examine companies each week that may be rising past their fair value, we can also find companies potentially trading at bargain prices. While many investors would rather have nothing to do with companies tipping the scales at 52-week lows, I think it makes a lot of sense to determine whether the market has overreacted to the downside, just as we often do to the upside.

Here's a look at three fallen angels trading near their 52-week lows that could be worth buying.

Dial up this dividendDial-up Internet connections might be for the dinosaurs, and the days of high growth are long gone for United Online (Nasdaq: UNTD) , but that doesn't mean you should ignore the stock at these dirt cheap levels.

While revenue is more or less flat these days, United Online's strict cost controls keep profits moving slightly higher, which, in turn, keeps its dividend at very healthy levels. Currently yielding more than 8%, United Online could offer an investment payback in as little as nine years if it can keep that yield up! Former Internet service providing peer Earthlink (Nasdaq: ELNK) has taken to transforming itself into an IT company in order to save its petering revenue stream, leaving the low-cost ISP space almost exclusively to United Online. Clearly not the most exciting tech company by any means, United Online is trading at just 90% of book value and seven times forward earnings. I don't see the company getting much cheaper from here.

Foreign exchangeWho said students were the only thing you could exchange across continents? Telkom Indonesia (NYSE: TLK) is yet another foreign telecom that has wound up in the delectable dividend column.

The company is currently offering a dividend yield of 7.5% and has grown that yield by an annual rate north of 20% over the past decade. Foreign telecoms aren't going to knock your socks off with enormous growth rates, but their predictable levels of cash flow and lack of competition often make for a consistent dividend and slow but steady growth. Telkom Indonesia has grown revenue fourfold since 2001 and is valued at a reasonable 11 times next year's earnings. Relative to some domestic alternatives, this company offers a good balance of value and income, and it just might be a nice match for a conservatively run portfolio.

An ETF I can digOver the past couple of weeks it's become apparent to me just how inexpensive much of the gold sector has become. While I've had fun picking apart various gold miners that could be attractive plays, this week I'm going to suggest lumping them all together in the Global X Pure Gold Miners ETF (AMEX: GGGG) .

Not only does gold provide a great hedge against inflation -- and, in recent years, against market downturns -- but the fund itself offers a reasonably low 0.59% annual management fee. Its largest holding is Eldorado Gold (NYSE: EGO) , a company with rising short interest that I recently profiled as a solid income producer with expenses that are well under control and increasing output. I don't think you could go wrong with this basket in your portfolio.

Foolish roundupThis week's focus was on high-yielding dividends that could be had on the cheap and ways you can protect yourself from a toppy market and inflation. I'm so confident these three names will bounce off their lows that I'm going to make a CAPScall of outperform on each one.

Real estate brokers find passion raising goats

By MARIA MERZEAU | Central Florida's Agri-Leader Published: March 21, 2012 Updated: March 21, 2012 - 9:03 AM

The transition from working in the corporate world to farming goats is well known to Pam and Jim Lunn, owners of The Dancing Goat in Tampa.

Ten years ago, Pam Lunn, 57, had her own business in the road-building industry before becoming a farmer. She is also a real estate broker and holds a bachelor's degree in art education. Her husband, Jim Lunn, 61, is also a real estate broker.

The farm started with the goats in 2000 as a hobby farm. They began with four show goats they bought in Tennessee.

"I decided that I was going to become a farmer," Pam said. "It's amazing the journey that it has been. I knew nothing about being a rancher. I knew very little about dairy goats."

The commercial farm started in 2007.

"This year we are just starting to take off. I have depleted all our savings; any new business it takes five years, and this year people are supporting local farming," Pam said.

Pam is from West Virginia and has been in Florida since the 1970s. She came to Florida after finishing college and is the first one in her family to become a farmer.

Pam is now back in school at the University of South Florida earning another bachelor's degree, in geology and environmental studies.

The farm raises 20 goats a year. They raise LaMancha dairy goats and French alpine dairy goats. The farm has three acres and leases seven acres nearby.

First Person: I'm Preparing for a Dot-Com Rally

COMMENTARY | Unlike the three librarians in my family, I'm not a book lover. I love my laptop and all the technological gadgets. I haven't looked up anything in an encyclopedia since 1988.

As a person who invests frequently in the stock market, I saw the recent news that Encyclopaedia Britannica stopped publishing print editions of it's encyclopedia as a positive sign for social media and technology stocks. It's just another bad sign, though, for stocks related to print media, paper and publishing.

To me, this marks the final days of print media. But I'm stocking up on technology stocks in preparation for another dot-com rally.

I'm sure some people are sad to see the end of the print era, but I'm not. I grew up reading the Encyclopaedia Britannica. I'd look something up in an encyclopedia when I wanted to know the correct answer. Now I look things up on the Internet, of course, not as sure whether I am actually getting the "real answer."

To me, encyclopedias are like other books that accumulate dust. I have no romantic attachments to books. I didn't sympathize with Meg Ryan's character in "You've Got Mail," who owned "The Shop Around the Corner" bookstore that was being shutdown by the mega bookstores.

As far as investing in stocks, I think it's more apparent than ever that technology stocks are here to stay. We are past the dot-com bubble of the 1990s. Now, it's no longer about speculation. Without a doubt, technology stocks are the present and the future.

For anyone who is younger than 55, it's only about digital products now - not paper products. While the paper products or print media products such as the newspaper still have an appeal for the older generation, fewer companies will cater to that niche market.

According to an article by the Associated Press, Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc. is focusing on its online encyclopedia.

A part of me is tempted to buy one of the final hardcover online encyclopedia that are on sale at Britannica's website for $1,395. It would just be for the sentimental value since I think books are poor investments.

I ask myself, where would I put them? I have trouble cramming all of the books we own now on our bookshelves.
