Internet Explorer 10: Touch-Friendly and Securely Sandboxed

By Peter Bright, Ars Technica

Microsoft is continuing to show off new features coming in its Internet Explorer 10 web browser, with a couple of posts describing its touch-friendly Metro interface and its enhanced security.

The current trend in browser design, led by Google Chrome, is to scale back the browsers interface so that it takes less and less of the screen, devoting more room to the web content itself. Windows 8s Metro design similarly removes window chrome to put the focus on content.

Metro Internet Explorer 10 is the logical conclusion of this trend: Most of the time it has no visible interface at all, leaving only the webpage visible. Its app bar, displayed by swiping from the top or bottom of the screen or right clicking the mouse, contains tabs, the address bar, and so on.

The Metro version of Internet Explorer feels slick and comfortable using both touch and mouse and keyboard interaction. Particular highlights are the tile-based favorites view and the tab thumbnails, both shown to good effect in Microsofts post.

Internet Explorer 9 introduced some particularly taskbar-oriented features: support for pinning sites to the taskbar, and the ability for those pinned sites to create custom options in the Jump list. In Windows 8, sites can be pinned to the Start screen to make them instantly accessible. Sites pinned this way can even update their tile to show status notifications much in the way that real apps can do. However, the Jump lists are tucked away, only available from within Internet Explorer.

One concern that this chromeless look raises is that of differentiation; Metro-style versions of both Chrome and Firefox are being developed, and its hard to see how they might look any different.

Security-wise, Internet Explorer 10 will include a new Enhanced Protected Mode. Protected Mode is the name Microsoft gives to its sandboxing technique. The current version, introduced in Internet Explorer 7 on Windows Vista, creates a separate, low-privilege process for running JavaScript and rendering HTML. This low-privilege process has no write access to most of the file system. This means that even if there is a security flaw in the browser, the attacker cannot write malware to the hard disk.

Updated: New Panda Refresh? Google Update Happening…

There is a lot of chatter in the forums including WebmasterWorld and random Google Webmaster Help threads starting yesterday and this morning about significant changes to the Google search results.

I am seeing a lot of individual complaints that sites that showed up yesterday no longer show up. The folks at WebmasterWorld are claiming that the search results landscape has changed for the SERPs they track.

One webmaster said:

Have you seen changes? I am not sure if this would be considered a Panda refresh or just a general update or nothing at all. I am going to ping Google to see if they can give me more information.

Forum discussion at WebmasterWorld and random Google Webmaster Help.

Update: Google told me there is no Panda update happening right now. Nor is there a data refresh. I am not sure why so many people are seeing changes to the search results, when Google told me it is not Panda, nor is it anything else on their end.

Keyword ROI: The Key SEO Ingredient

The money youre able to make from a top position in search engine result pages (SERPs) often determines the effort you're willing to take. Search engine marketing (SEM) is maturing and now that there is little secret sauce left it comes down to ability and willingness to put in the required effort. Increasingly the ability to make money from a particular keyword is the key to successful search engine optimization (SEO).

The ideal situation for ranking on any type of search results is getting clearer and clearer. Where there used to be many shortcuts, Panda offers a great example where low quality SEO and guerrilla tactics are no longer as successful. Only unfair ranking factors like exact match domains keep SEO from being a level playing field, but its getting there.

In a market where everybody should spend the same effort for the same result it all comes down to how much effort can you take? SEO effort is determined by a lot of factors which eventually all come down to money. If you make enough money you can even buy a top ranking website to re-use their positions and traffic.

Although your competitors might have a head start, they did put in the effort once. If you're currently gaining on them, you can probably predict how much effort is still needed before you beat them.

Before you overtake all the top positions of your competition, think about the following: You should avoid an arms race! If they are currently in a comfortable situation they can probably increase their effort while you are still catching a breath from just getting there. Sneak up to them and only overtake highly monitored keywords once you are breathing down their neck.

There will always be a big difference in the ways certain companies are able to use their resources. While big corporations have a lot going for them, theyre seldom flexible. They might even make less money from a top position because of this.

A small, well converting website will be able to use its creativity and flexibility to outsmart their expensive and unwieldy corporate structure. This takes SEO very close to being a level playing field.

Keyword ROIprovides a great basis for effort calculations.

When you calculate the maximum effort you can take (by looking at the money youre able to make) for you and your competitors, you can determine where they will start to fall behind. If your calculation shows they wont, you should increase the money youre able to make.
