Google Releases Youtube Instructional Videos

Google Webmaster Central has released a few Youtube clips describing the best methods for indexing video content, to supplement their Webmaster Tools dialogue. Google states that when video content is marked up in the body of the page, search engines and other sites can recognize it, and may use it to improve the display of video content on a page or in search results. Marking up content provides information about videos that allows Google and other sites to index them. Along with a description of common video indexing mistakes webmasters make, Google also added tips on video indexing markup, as well as a clip on video platform restrictions.

Google also added a clip about schema.org, a set of standards that Google, Microsoft and Yahoo have jointly initiated.

Search engines are utilizing on-page markup in a number of ways. For example, Google uses it to create rich snippets in search results. Not every type of information in schema.org will be surfaced in search results, but over time, one can expect that more data will be used in more ways. Google currently supports rich snippets for people, events, reviews, products, recipes, and breadcrumb navigation, and the new schema.org markup can be used for these types.

Google Video Filter By Source A Porn Spam Target?

DecorPlanet posted a complaint in the Google Webmaster Help forums where Google Video search is showing pornographic and adult videos even when the filter is set to only show search results from his site.

To reproduce the bug or the spam target:

1) Go to Google Videos and search for "shower panels videos"
2) Under Any Source filter, click "decorplanet.com"
3) Go to page 4+ (first 3 and a half pages have legit decorplanet's videos)

Now, I don't see the pornography until closer to page ten or so. But I still see it, even when I am filtering the results to just show me videos from the decorplanet.com source.

I am not sure if this is a bug with Google or if pornographers are spamming an loophole in Google - or maybe both?

Gary Illyes from Google said in the forum thread:

Thanks for reaching out. I let the engineers know about it and they'll take a look.

The issue is still there and there is no word on a fix from Google yet.

Greenwich FD: Dryer fan sparked Bible St. fire

An exhaust fan inside a dryer caused the blaze at a multi-family Bible Street home Thursday night, a fire official said Friday.

Acting Fire Marshal Jim McDonald said fire crews acted quickly in containing the fire in a third-floor kitchen of 25 Bible St. in Cos Cob. The fire started a little after 9 p.m.

"Damage was limited to the dryer itself," he said, explaining that the department ruled out the possibility that the fire started in the dryer drum.

The fire department removed the damaged appliance from the household after extinguishing the blaze.

McDonald could not elaborate on what caused the fan to spark the fire.

"Who knows what was in that fan?" he said.

Deputy Chief Thomas Zack said Thursday night the damage could have been significantly worse if the fire department had not received a quick phone call from one of the tenants. A man who lives on the second and third floors of the home with his wife and three children reported the fire at 9:25 p.m.

"All in all, it was initiating a 911 call quickly that really helped a lot, because if that tenant weren't home it would have been a much, much worse circumstance, especially in an old wood-frame house like that," Zack said.

Smoke was visible from the back of the house when firefighters arrived on the scene, Zack said.

There were no injuries in the incident and only minor smoke damage, he said.

Firefighters safely evacuated the residents of the household while the fire was extinguished, he said.

The house is habitable and the residents stayed there Thursday night, McDonald said.

The crews were on the scene for about 40 minutes, leaving after a cat that had been missing "for a while" was located, Zack said.

Nine vehicles responded from the Cos Cob, central, Sound Beach and North Street stations, McDonald said.
