Wikipedia has changed our lives: Ravishankar

Wikipedia has changed our lives as few other things have, A. Ravishankar, project director, Wikimedia India, said in Bidar on Sunday. He was speaking at a training workshop for students about how to write articles for the online encyclopedia and how to upload pictures. Information that is freely available in real time has made our life easy. We tend to depend so much on Wikipedia that it is difficult to imagine how we lived before it, he said.

Tools

He introduced students to Wiki source, creative commons and other tools.

He spoke about the use of free and open source in higher education. He gave tips to engineering students to use such tools and books in a downloadable format for better understanding of their subjects. He said that the Wikimedia foundation was encouraging school and college students to develop an interest in computing as well as free and open source technologies.

Omshivaprakash H.L., senior Wikipedian, led the students through a step by step process of editing Wikipedia. He spoke of the importance of active engagement with Wikipedia by regular editing and updating of information. He helped Kannada writer Raghushankh Bhatambra to open a Wikipedia editing account and create an article.

The event was organised by the Bidar Wikipedia Community, the district administration and the Rotary Club of Bidar.
