Paddy McNair – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Patrick James Coleman "Paddy" McNair (born 27 April 1995) is a Northern Irish professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for English club Manchester United and the Northern Ireland national team. He has also played for Northern Ireland at under-17, under-19 and under-21 levels.

McNair was first discovered by Manchester United's Northern Ireland-based club scout Tony Coulter when McNair was 12, and began travelling to train with United during school holidays.[2] He eventually signed for Manchester United in 2011, having impressed club scouts in a midfield role for Ballyclare Colts, but was later converted into a defender by United youth coach Paul McGuinness.[3] While making the transition from midfield to defence, McNair was compared to Michael Carrick by McGuinness.[4]

He made his senior debut for United on 27 September 2014 against West Ham United in a 21 victory in the Premier League at Old Trafford,[5] starting the game due to an injury crisis in defence.[6] McNair was praised by fans and manager Louis van Gaal for his solid defending, including a vital headed clearance while United were down to 10 men.[7] Despite his inexperience, Manchester United won all four of the first matches which McNair started.[8] After impressive performances at Right-back for both the under-21's and the senior team when United's centre backs were fully fit, van Gaal praised McNair and suggested he could be a regular in that position for the next 10 years.[9] On 10 February, he signed a new contract with Manchester United, keeping him at the club until June 2017.[10]

On 4 November 2014, McNair was called up to the Northern Ireland senior team for the first time, ahead of a European qualifier away to Romania,[11] but did not play. He made his debut on 25 March in a friendly against Scotland at Hampden Park, playing the entirety of a 10 defeat.[12]
