Wikipedia monument built in Poland

Adam Westlake

Wikipedia is the online encyclopedia that can be seen as both one of the most impressive collections of human knowledge, available to anyone, for free, as well as the first resource for students' last minute research when an assignment is due the next the morning. While the website runs on a non-profit model, asking for users' donations regularly, one town in Poland has gone above and beyond to show their gratitude by having a physical monument built.

The small town of Slubice, located in western Poland, along the German border, with its population of roughly 18,000, has contributed 47,000 zlotys (approx. $14,200/11,250 euros) for their tribute to Wikipedia. Standing less than six and half feet tall, the statue features four standing figures with their arms stretched up to support Wikipedia's globe logo made up of puzzle pieces. It is made of fiber and resin, and is laminated to take on a brass appearance. Scheduled to be unveiled on October 22nd, the monument will placed in Slubice's central square.

The original idea for the statue was put forth by Krzysztof Wojciechowski, the director of Collegium Polonicum, a local college in Slubice, who wanted to show his appreciation and awe for Wikipedia and its creators due to the site's size and services. With over 1 million Polish language articles, the Polish version of the site is Wikipedia's 12th largest, and it remains very popular in the country.

The design was done by 30 year old Armenian artist Mihran Hakobjan, who graduated from a college in Slubice. The town's deputy mayor has commented that he feels the statue, "a tribute to an entire community working selflessly for the benefit of others," reflected the ideals of Slubice, adding that it will hopefully increase tourism. Wikipedia is also seemingly pleased with the monument, as a Polish representative for the site said they hope it would continue to raise awareness and contributions.

Wikipedia founder to float mobile phone company

TPO was founded by Andrew Rosenfeld, the Labour donor, two years ago and won the backing of Mr Wales earlier this year. Mr Wales owns 10pc of the company and also serves as executive director of strategy and digital community.

The service has signed up more than 10,000 members in the UK and has doubled since June. It operates using EEs phone network.

TPO plans to expand into the US early next year and has agreed a deal with Sprint to use its network.

Mr Rosenfeld is chairman of TPO and owns the majority of the shares, while Mark Epstein, the co-founder of campaign agency Mass1, is chief executive.

The management team intend to maintain a majority shareholding in the company following the IPO. As well as donating 10pc of customers monthly bills to charity, TPO will donate a quarter of its trading profits to the TPO Foundation.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Mr Wales said: The business has mainly been testing but now it is up-and-running in the UK and we have signed a deal in America so we want to go big there. It is the right time to put the pedal to the metal. Its a good time to raise money.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales sees potential in a new phone network

The company that had been introduced to Wales was The Peoples Operator (TPO), a new mobile phone network. TPO wants to shake up the mobile phone industry by donating 10pc of each customers bill to a charity or cause chosen by the consumer. This 10pc will be funded by TPO scrapping marketing costs and instead relying on word of mouth to spread the brand.

Wales was introduced to TPO by its founder, Andrew Rosenfeld, the property tycoon and Labour party donor who was caught up in the cash for honours scandal in 2006.

Our wives know each other, so I have met him socially in London, Wales said. The first time he ever talked to me about it we were on holiday.

The reason I got involved is I have become really intrigued by the power of word of mouth, which is much higher than it was before. It used to be if you liked something you told two people, but now you can tell 200 people on Facebook.

The concept that you could give 10pc of your bill and still be extraordinarily profitable if you can get word of mouth growth, thats really compelling.

Rosenfeld set up the company in 2012, but with Wales onboard it has started to grow quickly 103pc since June and it now has more than 10,000 users.

Wales has pressed for expansion beyond the UK and developed the social network that TPO hopes will allow consumers to spread the brand.

I said: I dont want to do this if its UK-only, a small company. Everything I have done is global, so we should be thinking global from day one.

Now, TPO is preparing to put the pedal to the metal, as Wales explained.

This week the company is expected to unveil plans to float on Aim. The money raised from the initial public offering (IPO) will help the development of the social network and expansion into the US.
