English Wikipedia – Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The English Wikipedia is the English language edition of the Wikipedia online encyclopedia. English is the first language in which Wikipedia was written. It was started on 15 January 2001. It is the largest encyclopedia in the world, and the largest version of Wikipedia since April 2019.[1] It has 6,513,124 articles as of 14 June 2022.[2] In October 2015, the total volume of the compressed texts of the English Wikipedia's articles added up to 11.5 gigabytes.

The Simple English Wikipedia is a variation in which most of the articles use only basic English vocabulary (simplewiki). There is also the Old English (nglisc/Anglo-Saxon) Wikipedia (angwiki). It has a newsletter called The Signpost.

Wikipedias in other languages have imitated some of its technical and organizational features.

As the English Wikipedia is very popular, there can be many people editing the wiki in one minute. This made recent changes less effective for understanding changes. Instead, editors can select and watch for changes in particular articles, using the "watchlist" feature of MediaWiki. Both watchlist and recent changes can be filtered to show particular kinds of edits, such as edits from IP addresses or edits that may possibly be vandalism. Some editors use special software to detect and fix vandalism.[3][4]

Some people think that the English Language Wikipedia shows bias and unfairness.[5] Editors of reference works such as the Encyclopdia Britannica have questioned Wikipedia's utility and status as an encyclopedia.[6] An example of bias is that around 90% of Wikipedia editors are male.[7] Other people think that Wikipedia is more useful than other encyclopedias because it is large and can be updated quickly.

In 2012, the logo of the English Wikipedia like most Wikipedias was slightly changed. However, some Wikipedias, like the Simple English Wikipedia, still kept the old logo.

I fed an AI Hideo Kojima’s Wikipedia page and interviewed it – For The Win

Interviewer: How do you feel about Konami?

Hideo Kojima: I dont really have any strong feelings about them. We parted ways amicably, and I wish them the best.

Interviewer: Why exactly did you split from Konami?

Hideo Kojima: I wanted to create my own studio so that I would have more creative freedom.

Interviewer: Why did Konami scrub your name from Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes if the split was amicable?

Hideo Kojima: Im not sure. I guess they were just trying to distance themselves from me.

Interviewer: Why would they want to distance themselves from you?

Hideo Kojima: I dont know. I guess they just dont like my games.

Interviewer: How does that make you feel?

Hideo Kojima: Its fine. Im just focused on making the best games I can.

Interviewer: Who do you think is the best character youve created?

Hideo Kojima: I think its Solid Snake. Hes a great character, and I think people can relate to him.

Interviewer: Why do you think hes relatable?

Hideo Kojima: I think its because hes a very human character. Hes not perfect, and he makes mistakes. But hes always trying to do the right thing, and I think people can respect that.

Interviewer: Would you consider kidnapping child soldiers as one of Snakes mistakes?

Hideo Kojima: Im not really sure. I just try to be cool about everything.

Interviewer: You were criticized for the character design of Quiet, a character who wears no clothes because she breathes through her skin. Do you think those criticisms were justified?

Hideo Kojima: I dont really have an opinion on that. I just wanted to create a character that I thought was cool.

Interviewer: What do you think is cool about a character whos nude and breathes through her skin?

Hideo Kojima: I just think its a cool concept.

Interviewer: Why are there so many jokes about poop in your games?

Hideo Kojima: Im not sure. I guess I just like poop jokes.

Interviewer: What can poop jokes tell us about the human condition?

Hideo Kojima: They just make people laugh.

They sure do, AI Kojima. They sure do.

Abeg who handles this Wikipedia. Bloggers my Ex husband, the father of my children Mr Ademidun Ojo was never a Movie Marketer ooooooooo, he was a CLEARING AGENT ., She cried out on her verified Instagram page.

The most infamous and ridiculous first class complaint ever – How a humble pack of macadamia nuts diverted a Korean Air flight, gripped an entire…

This site has spoken about how some First-Class privileges in airlines are completely nuts. But so are the tantrums of the passengers who occupy the best seats in these exclusive sections of airlines. And we mean literally nuts. This happened in 2014, on the 5th day of that fated December when Korean Airlines flight 086 was set to make its way from JFK International Airport in New York to Incheon International Airport in South Korea. There were 250 passengers on board bracing themselves for the long journey when something went off.Korean Air Boeing 747 first class. Via Korean Air.The then Vice-President of the airlines, Heather Cho, was one of the passengers occupying the First-Class seat. One would imagine this to be an ideal reason that the passengers of the flight could rest assured that the plane would depart on time and theyd have the best onboard experience. However, the crew decided to serve macadamia nuts in the First-Class, and that set off a chain of events that led to the creation of a Wikipedia page dedicated to the incident.

Korean Air Boeing 747 first class Image used for representation only. Via Korean Air.Ms. Cho observed that the nuts were served in a packet instead of being served on a plate. She rebuked flight attendant, Kim Do-hee and even escalated the issue to cabin-crew chief Park Chang-jin. One report states that she ordered Chang-jin to get on his knees and ask for her forgiveness for this trivial mistake. She even physically attacked him with a few whacks on his knuckles with a digital tablet. The altercation kept getting more severe till she fired him on the spot. Thats when Cho ordered that the plane return to the gate of departure (which means that it was clearly taxying or awaiting take-off).

Park Chang jinSo much for putting customers first in the hospitality industry, the entire saga caused a delay of twenty minutes, affecting the schedules of all 250 passengers and causing unnecessary challenges for the air-traffic control at the JFK. Even so, Park Chang-jin decided to let matters settle and not go public, till Cho alleged that he had an affair with his flight crew. Thats when he took matters into the public domain, calling out the ridiculous policies of Korean Airlines. When one angry passenger contacted the airline about the incident, they were pacified with a model airplane and a calendar by mail as a token of apology. Cute.

Heather Cho.The aggrieved flight attendant was pressured to state that they had quit voluntarily. They even went on record to state that the Transport Ministrys attempt to investigate the incident would be unreliable and that they would be in cahoots with the airlines. However, the investigation went on to prove that Ms. Cho had a nasty track record when on her inspection flights. She had attacked a flight attendant only a year before this incident for being served improperly cooked ramen noodles. In that instance, the company managed to sweep everything under the carpet, but wasnt so lucky with the Nutgate incident. Thanks to the flight attendant who went to the media right away.

Cho apologises before being questioned by the police. Via ChinadailyThe media trial led to an outcry against Cho and she was forced to resign as Vice President. Thats not all. There were criminal charges that were brought against her, which led her and her father (who is the Chairman of Korean Air) to apologize to the crew and their families. She even attempted visiting the homes of the victims but ended up leaving a note since they were not available on her arrival.

Via Unsplash / @Marcos Paulo PradoThis had strange economic implications on two vastly different things. The rates of Korean Air domestic flights dropped by over 6%. And the price of macadamia nuts soared! One report claims that the price rise was close to 300%. Its interesting to observe how a nut that is expensive enough to be served to the privileged few in First Class cabins of flights becomes a sensation among the general population, simply because of the latters curiosity to know what exact kind of nut warranted such an incident to take place. Its nuts!

Korean Air first class customers are now served nuts in a bowl. Screengrab / Youtube. On January 12th, 2015 it was presented to a court that the nuts are traditionally served in a bag according to the airlines policies, and therefore there was no wrong on part of the flight crew. While the chief didnt appear, the flight attendant did and testified to being physically assaulted and that she was later bribed with a teaching position at one of the brands affiliated institutions. Cho got away with a one-year prison sentence for changing flight course but was released in five months since Seoul High Court found her not guilty of changing the flights route. This joy was short-lived, since both, the flight attendant and her chief filed a civil lawsuit in the Supreme Court of the State of New York in March 2015. They accused Cho and the airline of physical attack and verbal abuse. This was dropped because all parties involved were in South Korea.

Korean air staff have protested on the streets of Seoul in Guy Fawkes masks against the abuses of the management. Via CNN.In yet another suit, the Seoul Western District Court ordered the airline to pay the chief 20 million KRW for coercion (over $16,000) and 30 million KRW (over $24,000) for Chos abuse.

There are a bunch of winners and losers in an affair like this. While the nuts gained huge popularity in Korea, the national carrier had some bad press that would be fully illustrated in parody videos and alley-side gossip.

Discover Woodland Trust’s Wikipedia for ancient trees | rossgazette.com – The Ross Gazette

The Woodland Trust is on the lookout for information on Herefordshires ancient trees.

The spring weather has given residents a chance to explore the nature in their back yards. Last month the Gazette reported ways in which walkers were collating and chronicling their favourite walking routes, theres now a similar challenge put to those with knowledge of Herefordshires trees.

The Woodland Trust is collating information on all ancient, veteran and notable trees from crowd-sourced knowledge.

All the data collected is publicly visible on their tree database at ati.woodlandtrust.org.uk

Anybody is able to look-up notable trees as well as add newly discovered ones, using the tree search page.

Last month the Gazette reported a local 1,500-year-old yew tree had been listed amongst 70 ancient trees which are to become part of the queens green canopy.

The Much Marcle yew, which can be found in Much Marcle churchyard is among 70 ancient trees and 70 ancient woodlands which make up part of the queens green canopy, a network of trees and woodlands dedicated to her majesty in celebration of the platinum jubilee. Its one of around 50 gargantuan yews found in British churchyards, which is defined as a trunk more than 30 feet in circumference.

The yew has a huge hollow which is unusual to see for an ancient maiden yew. Within the hollow there are two benches and, in the past, parish notices were often nailed inside the tree, serving as a community notice board.

In July 1953 the tree was measured by the Reverend Graham Holley, who was rector from 1967 to 1994, and Sir Ernlie Kyrle Pope. At four-and-a-half feet from the ground it measured 30 feet, 1 inch. The tree was re-measured in April 2006, where it was found to be 30 feet 11 inches, measured at the same height. The parochial church council have a certificate stating that the tree is 1,500-years-old.

Ancient trees are as much a part of our heritage as stately homes, cathedrals and works of art; but they dont get the same protection says the Woodland Trust.

Identifying where ancient trees are is one step closer to giving them the care and protection they need.

Records of these oldest and most characterful trees help the organisation to identify ancient tree hot spots, monitor current threats and future losses, as well as plan how best to conserve them in the future.

In the UK the majority of important trees are unprotected. The UKs ancient trees have no automatic right of protection. There is no equivalent to scheduled ancient monument status, which important archaeological sites have. They can be permanently damaged and even lost to a culture of safety and tidiness. They can be removed when land uses change and they have to compete with surrounding trees against overcrowding and gradual, creeping damage.
