PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. Tiger Woods had the last word against Sergio Garcia by winning The Players Championship on Sunday.
Woods ended a weekend of verbal sparring with Garcia by doing what he does best closing out tournaments, even if he let this one turn into a tense duel over the final hour at the TPC Sawgrass. Tied with Garcia with two holes to play, Woods won by finding land on the last two holes for par to close with a 2-under-par 70.
If only it were that simple for the Spaniard.
Garcia was standing on the 17th tee, staring across the water to an island as Woods made his par. He took aim at the flag with his wedge and hung his head when he saw the ball splash down short of the green. Then, Garcia hit another one in the water on his way to quadruple-bogey 7. He completed his stunning collapse by hitting his tee shot into the water on the 18th and making double bogey.
Woods was in the scoring trailer when he watched on TV as Swedish rookie David Lingmerth missed a long birdie putt that would have forced a playoff. It raced by the cup, and Lingmerth three-putted for bogey.
How about that? Woods said to his caddie Joe LaCava as he gave him a hug.
Woods won The Players for the first time since 2001 and joined Fred Couples, Davis Love III, Hal Sutton and Steve Elkington as the only two-time winners at the TPC Sawgrass. It was his 78th career win on the PGA Tour, four short of the record held by Sam Snead.
Lingmerth closed with a 72 and finished two shots behind along with Kevin Streelman (67) and Jeff Maggert, who also was tied for the lead until finding the water on the 17th to make double bogey. The 49-year-old Maggert birdied the 18th for a 70.
Garcia took 13 shots to cover the final two holes 6-over par and tumbled into a tie for eighth.

OTTAWA New Democrat MPs wont shut up. Many Tories hardly talk at all. And the Green Partys Elizabeth May talks more than the three other party leaders combined.
Those are some of the findings of a unique analysis that sliced and diced nearly eight million words spoken last year in the House of Commons by members of Parliament.
The analysis by Samara, a charitable think tank that works to improve political participation in Canada, uncovered an astonishing variation in MPs loquaciousness in the House.
New Democrat Peter Julian was an unstoppable verbal force, emitting 226,027 words in 2012 to narrowly edge Liberal Kevin Lamoureux for the title of most talkative MP.
At the other end of the spectrum, Conservatives Keith Ashfield, Rob Anders and Peter Penashue barely cleared their throats, each managing fewer than 1,000 words in the House of Commons during all of 2012.
Samara gathered the data while researching the alignment between what MPs talk about in the House and the declared interests of Canadians.
How does your MP stack up?
Alison Loat, Samaras co-founder and executive director, said she hoped the analysis would shine a light on how MPs use their powerful public platform in the House of Commons.

Star Trek Into Darkness sees one of the most iconic double acts return to cinema screens in the form of the Enterprise's Captain Kirk and his first officer Spock. And just like their characters, actors Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have developed quite the bond.
Zach and Chris are busy promoting their new movie around the world and it sounds like they're loving spending even more time together, despite their personalities being somewhat chalk and cheese:
"The worst thing is that Zach likes to play these ridiculous vocabulary games," Pine revealed to MTV News, "which he will tell everybody he wins, which is such a crock of bullsh--."
"I think we both have a healthy sense of competition, which infuses our dynamic a little bit with an edge of humor and spontaneity," says Quinto, using some typically big words to illustrate his point!

Just like Spock and Kirk the two actors have grown to rely on each other after a tough day: "When you're talking about exhaustion and depending on someone to answer questions all day long, you can depend on Zachary Quinto because that man can run words together like it is going out of style," Pine reveals about his co-star.
"You'll see me in interviews and a question will be asked and I'll just [go] 'uh-huh, uh-huh'... and I'll just look at Zach and Zach will take it away."
Zach meanwhile adds that his mate has a tendency to go off the rails when he's hungry, revealing: "The worst thing is, you've never met somebody who goes from totally normal to 'I have to eat right now,' says Quinto of Pine. "So we'll be in the middle of an eight-hour day of press, and then he'll just like hold the phone while he eats his oatmeal."
