"Marriage Equality" Narrowly Misses Being Named "Word of the Year"

Friday night in Boston the American Dialect Society gathered in a meeting to vote for the 2012 word of the year, and they came very close to choosing "marriage equality." Instead, "hashtag" was selected in a close run-off vote of 118 to 99.

In a press release posted shortly after the vote, the American Dialect Society explained that "Word of the Year is interpreted in its broader sense as 'vocabulary item' -- not just words but phrases. The words or phrases do not have to be brand-new, but they have to be newly prominent or notable in the past year." Other candidates for the word of the year included "YOLO" (an acronym for "you only live once"), "fiscal cliff," "Gangnam style" and "47 percent."

"Marriage equality" did win the "Most Likely to Succeed" category, one of eight categories that are voted on before the overall word of the year, in a landslide vote. It trounced the competition, which included "fiscal cliff," "superstorm," "MOOC" (for "massive open online course") and "big data," with a total of 156 votes. The other four contenders combined had a total of 41 votes.

Pakatan: Non-Muslims can use ‘Allah’

G Vinod, FMT

Pakatan Rakyat today announced that it has no qualms about non-Muslims using the word Allah to refer to God as long as it is not misused.

Speaking at a press conference here today, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said that Allah, which is written in the al-Quran, is special and cannot be translated properly to other languages.

Thats why Muslims of all races refer to God as Allah. So non-Muslims can use the holy word although it may not reflect the original meaning, he explained.

Also present were PKR supremo Anwar Ibrahim and DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang.

However, the decision made by Pakatan runs contrary to the Selangor Islamic Religious Councils (MAIS) stand today that non-Muslims in the state are forbidden from using the word Allah.

The Sultan of Selangor, Sharafuddin Idris Shah, had decreed that non-Muslims are forbidden from using the word Allah, as mentioned by His Majesty on Feb 18, 2010, as the name is a sacred word for Muslims, said MAIS secretary Mohd Misri Idris in a statement issued this morning.

Misri added that the ruler had also urged MAIS to take action against Muslims or non-Muslims should they go against the decision under Selangors Non-Islamic Religions Enactment (Control of Propagation Amongst Muslims) 1988.

Hadi, who is also Marang MP, said he regrets that Umno has resorted to use the holy word as a political tool to further its agenda.

ON WORK: The first word in mangled meanings

THE bulls**t market knows only one phase: the bull phase. So it is no surprise that 2012 turned out to be yet another a bumper year for guff, clich, euphemism and verbal stupidity.

There are so many prizes to award in my latest Golden Flannel Awards that I am axing my usual preamble and getting straight down to the business of giving out the gongs.

The big news is that Ive decided to supplement the prizes for bull with an award for COC. This stands for Chief Obfuscation Champion, and is open to big-name chief executives. When I conceived this award a few months ago, I promised it to Angela Ahrendts for writing in her annual report: "In the wholesale channel, Burberry exited doors not aligned with brand status and invested in presentation through both enhanced assortments and dedicated, customised real estate in key doors."

Now, alas, Im forced to take it away from her and give it to John Chambers instead. Last month he sent out an e-mail to Cisco employees beginning "Team," and ending: "Well wake the world up and move the planet a little closer to the future." Chambers beats Ahrendts because he has created a concoction of sublime arrogance and cheesiness out of short, household words. He is a well-deserving COC.

I realise this will be disappointing to the Burberry boss, so Im putting her in for another new award: The Door Gong. I was certain she would win this for her outstanding effort in pretending her company sells doors when really it makes super-pricey raincoats. But in the closing days of the year I found a company called Record, which actually makes folding aluminium doors but has elected to describe itself as a supplier of "entrance solutions".

Staying with solutions, the next prize is the Martin Lukes Creovation Cup for combining two words to make something less effective than either. This was a crowded field as there was "solutioneering" from Yanmar, "innovalue" from the Taiwanese government and "sustainagility" from Atos Origin. All are truly creovative, but Im giving the Cup to Momentum UK, for claiming we live in a "phygital" world. I particularly admire the use of the trademark.

From complex words to simple ones, comes the Preposition Award. There are two contenders here. The first was shown to advantage recently in a statement from Lloyds: "We have made substantial progress against our strategic objectives", which suggests the bank is moving in the wrong direction. But the winner is the innocuous word "to" as increasingly heard in presentations: "Ive got some slides to talk to" the unfortunate implication being that the speaker has to talk to the slides because no one else is listening.

The next award, Most Extravagant Job Title, is always hotly contested, but this year there is a clear winner: Dr Amantha Imber is Head Inventiologist at Inventium. Her job description: "to turn people into innovation dynamos".

Now on to Best Euphemism For Firing People. Lots of companies sacked people last year by "consolidating leadership", but only Citibank deftly managed to hide the fact that it was axing 1,100 people in a press release that talked of "optimising the customer footprint across geographies".

This makes the old sacking euphemism of "right-sizing" look rather respectable. Since then the word "right" has suffered much wrong, so much so Im giving it a special prize. This goes to Oliver Wyman, which in a report on the Future of Asian Banking came up with not only "right-spacing" but the downright sinister "right-culturing".

Pakatan In Unison: Non-Muslims Can Use The Word ‘Allah’

Abdul Hadi (L) said the word Allah cannot be misused by other quarters on Muslims in a manner which will result in confusionPETALING JAYA: Pakatan Rakyats supreme council today unanimously decided that the word Allah should be free to be used by people from all religions, on the condition that it isnt misused.

PAS president, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang (pic) said, the word Allah is a word which follows the original meaning in the Quran, and cannot be accurately translated into other languages.

The word Allah cannot be misused by other quarters on Muslims in a manner which will result in confusion.

Muslims of other races still use the word Allah (minus translation) when interpreting the Al-Quran in their own languages as well as during prayers.

However, Islam does not forbid those from other religions from using the word in their daily practices, even though they do not achieve the Al-Qurans original meaning, Abdul Hadi told a Press conference at PKR headquarters today.

The decision was made after Pakatan leaders held a meeting, which was attended by PKR chief Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Abdul Hadi, and DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang, earlier today.

However, the Oppositions decision appeared to be in contrast with the decree issued by the Sultan Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Last Sunday, the sultan reiterated his earlier decree two years ago, that non-Muslims in the state cannot use the word Allah.

This was explained in a statement earlier today by Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) secretary, Datuk Misri Idris, who said the sultan made the statement in a meeting with the council.

Misri explained that the sultan wants MAIS and the Selangor Religious Department (JAIS) to take stern action on Muslims and non-Muslims who trivialize the fatwa which forbids the use of the word Allah by non-Muslims in February 2010.
