HATE painted on Richmond Free Press newspaper box – again

Posted on: 11:46 pm, December 28, 2012, by Raymond Hawkes, updated on: 04:22pm, December 29, 2012

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) Once again, someone has targeted a Richmond Free Press newspaper box, painting the word HATE on the door, blocking the text of the front page.

This incident, at the corner of the Boulevard and Westwood Avenue, is just the latest for the award-winning paper that has long roots in Richmonds African-American community.

According to publisher Ray Boone, the Free Press has seen its boxes stolen, flattened by trucks, set on fire and covered with words like WHITE HATER and RACIST during its 20 years in Richmond.

Many who read the Free Press know theres a political agenda, sort of a counterweight to the historically conservative, at least editorially, Richmond Times-Dispatch. Readers of the paper also know critics are given space in the editorial page.

The Last Word: Bank of Wenger, Terry's Pussy Riot and the dodgy caviar at Wimbledon

Predicting the future is a thankless task just ask the Mayans, who were inclined to doubt whether newspapers beyond 21 December were strictly necessary. 2013 should, by rights, be a hangover sporting year, since the Olympic flame has guttered and died, but it might be worth hanging on for.

Subject to the usual terms and conditions (the value of your emotional investment can go up or down) these are the potential highlights of the next 12 months:

January

Andy Murray wins the Australian Open in another classic five-set final against Novak Djokovic. The Lawn Tennis Association buy the Robinson's Barley franchise and promote themselves as the Scot's "performance partner". Arsne Wenger is co-opted on to the Bank of England's monetary policy committee, who raise interest rates to 15 per cent. Kanu is among 13 players bought by Harry Redknapp before the transfer window closes.

February

Roman Abramovich offers Neymar 400,000 a week, the governorship of Chukotka and a timeshare on his superyacht after he scores four of Brazil's six goals against England at Wembley. Rafa Benitez is sacked as Chelsea can only beat Bradford City 7-0 in the final of the League Cup. He is replaced by Bobby Campbell, who last managed the club in 1991. Alan Curbishley, the initial favourite for the job, refuses to undergo an interview.

March

The Premier League respond to the failure of UK teams to reach the Champions' League quarter-finals by announcing a series of 39 knock-out matches across Asia. The Three Wise Monkeys Trophy, sponsored by Thaksin Shinawatra, will become an annual event. Wales take the wooden spoon in rugby union's Six Nations' Championship after being beaten 36-11 by England. The Wales coach, Warren Gatland, resigns, but keeps his British and Irish Lions job despite having signed a pre-contract agreement with the Queensland Reds.

April

Ian Poulter wins the Masters by five shots, and launches the Lime Green tie-dye range of replica jackets. The Abu Dhabi Tourist Authority buy Sir Alex Ferguson Inc for 150 million and unveil the Scot as Manchester City's new "executive consultant strategist". Uefa say this respects the spirit of their Financial Fair Play rules. Michel Platini conducts the press conference in a cryogenic chamber to promote his vision of a Winter World Cup in 2020.

FINAL, Word of God 70 Webb 57 : Isaiah Hicks and Mitron Terry combined for 14 final quarter points, but the duo's performance was not enough and the Webb Warriors fell to the Word of God Holy Rams in the Shavlik Randolph winner's bracket.

Starting center Tyrek Coger contributed greatly to the Word of God win. Coger scored 8 points in the last quarter and played punishing defense in the post. He finished with 23 points and 9 rebounds. 8th grader Jordan Whitfield scored 17 points, and future Pitt point guard Joshua Newkirk finished with 12.

As for the Webb Warriors, Isaiah Hicks finished with 24 and Mitron Terry had 21. The performances of the two stars were not enough, and the duo never seemed to fire on all cylinders consistently through the game. Offensively, the team got little support outside of its two leading scorers.

The Shavlik Randolph Bracket final game is now set, and Word of God will play New Hampton High School of New Hampshire for the championship tomorrow night at 9 pm. Webb High School will face High Point Christian tomorrow at 2:20 pm for the prize of 3rd place.

END Q3, Word of God 47 Webb 40 : The Holy Rams jumped out to a quick lead in the third quarter thanks to 9 consecutive points from 8th grader Jordan Whitfield. Whitfield has shown the ability to hit the outside shot and has a good mid-range game as well. Center Tyrek Coger has added solid minutes down low, staying active on the glass. For the Webb Warriors, a large reason they are still in the game would be due to the play of Mitron Terry. After being held to just 3 points in the first half, Terry has scored 11 in the quarter. Isaiah Hicks was held scoreless in the 3rd, and the Warriors have had a hard time getting all their weapons playing well at the same time.

HALF, Word of God 30 Webb 27 : The second quarter of the game offered fans all the excitement they may have missed out on in the first, and the atmosphere has changed drastically here in the gym. The Holy Rams have fought off a furious scoring run by Isaiah Hicks and the Webb Warriors to go into the locker room up by 3.

"Jogging" – a fighting word?

Jen A. Miller, For The Inquirer Posted: Sunday, December 30, 2012, 3:01 AM

There aren't just four-letter curse words.

In running, at least, there's a three-letter one, too - Jog.

It's a dated term, a leftover from the first U.S. running boom that coincided with bell-bottoms and disco, when fewer than 2,000 people ran the New York City Marathon and when women were told not to run because it would ruin their femininity and reproductive health.

Women were banned from running certain distances because it was believed they couldn't physically handle it.

Using the term jogging now is either like calling your pants slacks (pants that, if they look good, are "sharp," and probably bought at Strawbridge & Clothier), or it's an insult.

Pre-running-boom, running was called "road work," and done primarily by athletes from other sports who wanted to stay in shape.

When running became something to do for the sake of itself, New Zealand running coach Arthur Lydiard called it jogging, and the word ended up here via Bill Bowerman, legendary University of Oregon track coach and Nike founder who wrote the book Jogging in 1966 after a visit with Lydiard.

As running evolved and the New York City Marathon numbers topped 10,000, then 20,000, then 40,000, the terminology changed.

Jogger still is used in newspapers as a synonym for runners ("Jogger chased by mountain lion," Denver Post, Dec. 22; "Escaped emu follows jogger through streets of Virginia Beach," The Daily Press, Dec. 14). But within the running community, jog became an unfortunate dividing line.

Incarnate Word tops St. Joe's for ninth Visitation Tournament title

FRONTENAC The Incarnate Word girls basketball team continued its near-decade long domination of the Visitation Christmas Tournament on Friday.

The Red Knights got a game-high 16 points from sophomore standout Napheesa Collier as they knocked off St. Josephs 49-34 in the championship game.

For Incarnate Word (10-0, No. 1 in the STLhighschoolsports.com small-schools rankings) it is its ninth title in the tournament -- second only to the host team, which has 10 -- its fifth straight and its eighth out of the past nine years.

It was really intense, said Collier, who helped the Red Knights beat the Angels a third straight year in the title game. I loved it. It was fun.

St. Josephs (7-1, No. 2 LS), which was aiming for its seventh tournament title, was led by Sydney Stipanovich, who had 10 points.

Down 9-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Red Knights outscored the Angels 14-3 in the second eight minutes of play to take a 22-12 lead at the half. They ballooned the lead to 39-23 at the end of three quarters, and they coasted from there.

I thought our defensive pressure was good, IWA coach Dan Rolfes said. Our press really turned things around in the second quarter (and) really gave us the momentum.

Red Knights junior McKenna Treece, who sat out all of last year with a knee injury, had a coming out party with 10 points, eight of which she tallied in the second quarter.

Shes just been battling injury after injury, said Rolfes of Treece, who also is rebounding from a broken bone in her foot she sustained early in the season. She posted big, demanded the ball, wanted the ball and finished.

Incarnate Word also got a solid effort from Nakiah Bell, who tallied 12 points and a number of steals.
