From pick-up line to palusot: Sawikaan 2012 to select word of the year

So far, 2012 has been a colorful year for language, as seen in this year's crop of suggestions for Filipinas Institute of Translation's (FIT) Salita ng Taon.

Level-up, pick-up line, wangwang, fish kill, pagpag, palusot, trending, SALN, impeachment, wagas, android and wi-fi among these is the word of the year, which will be declared during the Sawikaan 2012 conference this month.

In 2010, jejemon was word of the year, followed by Ondoy and korkor.

The word of the year is chosen from nominations from students, teachers, scholars, professionals, and others who are interested in language.

FIT's Vim Nadera told GMA News Online in an email.

The call for nominations is usually made around January, with April as the deadline. This year's deadline was on March 30, 2012. The finalists were chosen from words that became popular in the last two years.

"Mga 12 salita ito na naging popular sa nakaraang dalawang taon. Kaya ang 2012 salita ng taon ay sumasakop sa mga taong 2010-2012," Baquiran said.

On the other hand, a few suggestions did not meet the criteria of bearing new meaning. "Halimbawa ay 'planking' na higit na angkop sa Ingles na konteksto," Baquiran said.

"Ang salita ay dapat na may bagong aspekto ng kahulugan. Halimbawa, ang 'ukay' ay dating 'hukay' lamang. Pero nang maging tawag ito sa pagbebenta ng segunda manong gamit, nagkaroon ito ng bagong kahulugan sa maraming paraan," Baquiran said.

PES 2013 is in for the 'long-haul'

Konami says PES 2013 is a game that will grow over time to become a title contender.

The firm is hopeful the improvements made to this years game will win over fans, and create long-term success driven by word of mouth.

This is the year where press is openly talking about PES being back to its best, said Konamis PR and marketing boss Brian Ayers.

We think PES 2013 is going to be in it for the long-haul, especially in terms of the total lifetime sales as recommendations are passed on as people play the game.

But its not all about the long-term. PES 2013s launch campaign has included positive press coverage, while Konami took over key portals when the PES 2013 demo arrived in July.

The publisher will also be supporting PES 2013 with a lengthy print campaign, as well as two special editions, which are exclusive to Blockbuster and GAME. The firm is also working closely with TALKSport and sporting websites.

Ayers added: Theres a very strong buzz out there, and press reaction has been both widespread and positive. This is feeding through to retail that PES is a true title contender, so we are confident this is a new beginning for the series.

Cest has last word at Listowel

Cest Notre Gris (5-1) regained the winning thread in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Premier Nursery at Listowel.

Jim Gorman's grey had finished fourth to the reopposing Count Of Limonade at Killarney, but appreciated the testing conditions here and wore down long-time leader Wholelotofrosie in the shadow of the post.

Winning jockey Ronan Whelan said: "Mr Gorman told me don't give up on him and to keep grinding it out. He hit a flat spot around two furlongs out but he kept finding for me."

Whelan looked like following up when Kanes Pass struck for home in the Feale Handicap, but Ross Coakley was hot on his heels on Jappeli (10-1) and just got the verdict in a tight finish.

Talitha Kum's progression continued as she struck at the third time of asking in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden.

Paul Deegan's 9-4 market leader hasn't been beaten far in a couple of good maidens and, with her sights lowered slightly, she powered 10 lengths clear of Tobann.

Deegan said: "She did it real well and handled the ground. She is big filly and has strengthened up with each run. She might go now for the Blenheim Stakes at the Curragh or the Birdcatcher at Naas."

Fitzpatrick campaign sparks word war over debates

Congressman Mike Fitzpatricks campaign is going after Kathy Boockvar on the topic of debates with over-the-top language that makes it seem as if the Democratic challenger pushed a grandmother in a wheelchair off a cliff.

A Friday afternoon press release assails Boockvars campaign for not scheduling debates, when in fact she has scheduled several that Fitzpatrick has not agreed to.

It is unfair for the serious, locally-based community organizations to be used as pawns and ignored by the Boockvar campaign. Frankly, its an embarrassment, wrote Faith Bender, Fitzpatricks campaign manager, in a news release.

Boockvars respect for the process and local community is mortifying and shameful. It is a travesty that Boockvar is making a mockery of this long-standing and respected tradition in our community.

Methinks thou dost protest too much.

Fitzpatrick appears to be the candidate declining those invitations from locally-based community organizations.

Boockvar has agreed to participate in debates sponsored by the AARP on Sept. 29; at Ohev Shalom Temple on Oct. 14; and at Heritage Creek in Warwick, sponsored by the Bucks County Coalition of Senior Communities on Oct. 24.

As far back as April 26, she agreed to a Sept. 27 debate sponsored by the League of Women Voters and the Bucks County Womens Advocacy Coalition.

None of those are listed on Fitzpatricks debate schedule.

This is the most outrageous fabrication, said Jon Blair, Boockvars campaign manager. Theres not even a grain of truth on it. From top to bottom false.

Philip Maddocks: Democrats vote to replace the word ‘God’ with ‘Bill Clinton’

Reacting to the chorus of praise for the convention speech delivered by Bill Clinton, Democrats hastily voted to change their party platform for a second time in less than a week, replacing the word God with the words Bill Clinton.

Moments after convention chairman Antonio Villaraigosa formally gaveled in the change, Democratic lawmakers burst into cheer - with some even pushing to name Hope, Ark., the birthplace of Mr. Clinton, as the capital of Israel.

Mr. Villaraigosa called the vote three times, allowing him and his fellow Democrats to linger a little longer in the afterglow of contentment Mr. Clintons convention performance had delivered.

And when Mr. Villaraigosa finally announced, the ays have it, boisterous chants of Bill, Bill, Bill erupted from the gathering of Democrats, who had convened in front of the Jefferson Memorial for the occasion, their numbers spilling across the south bank of the Tidal Basin and into downtown Washington, D.C.

A campaign official for President Barack Obama said the commander in chief had personally requested that the words Bill Clinton be put into the platform after Mr. Clintons rousing defense of Mr. Obama. Why didnt they change that sooner? the president said, according to the official, when he heard that Gods name had been removed to make room for Mr. Clintons.

Mr. Obama said he remains a devout Christian and that his faith is an integral part of his daily life, but that no one, not me, not God, could make a better case for my first term than Bill Clinton.

The change came as Democrats spent the days following Mr. Clintons convention speech fretting over whether they were missing a political opportunity by playing it safe and hitching their platform to God when going all in with Mr. Clinton was the smarter play for carrying Ohio in November.

The chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, said in a statement that the change was made to maintain consistency with the personal views expressed by the president, the Democratic Party, and even God himself following Bill Clintons speech last week.

A senior administration official emphasized that the president had intervened to bring the platform in line with his own vision. The president expressed his view after the speech, and it hasnt changed, the official said. Last week proved that there is no one including any deity who has as much import in the daily lives of Democrats than Bill Clinton. And that plank of the platform has not changed since last week.

Robert Gibbs, an adviser to the Obama campaign, sought to downplay the notion that Democrats were forsaking their spiritual well-being simply for a bump in the polls by substituting the words Bill Clinton for God in the platform.
