Router Makes You Anonymous Online, Skirts Censorship

If youre not sure whether anonymity online is important, just take a look at this new Kickstarter project, which has already raised $283,000 of its $7,000 goal.

Its called Anonabox, and its an open-source networking device that routes wireless and wired Internet traffic through Tor software. Tor is free and works by first encrypting your digital data and then bouncing it around the Internet through random computers.

You dont need Anonabox to get Tor, but for guarding against any activity outside of Web browsing, Tor can be a little complicated for the average online privacy-seeker.

Thats where the $45 Anonabox comes in. Just run a cable from your Wi-Fi to Anonabox, which creates a secure wireless network. Or, if you want to hardwire into the network, run an Ethernet cable from Anonabox to your computer.

On top of secure Web browsing, youll be able to send email, instant messages and share files.

According to Wired, Anonabox isnt the first plug and play Tor router, but others, such as the Safeplug, have by criticized for security flaws.

Because Anonabox is open source, its developers say that if there are any flaws, theyll be easily fixed.
