Xinhua Gets Burned By "Great Firewall"
The Chinese regime is famous for its "Great Fire Wall" mdash;a comprehensive Internet censorship system that blocks websites authorities don #39;t want the public to see. But what about when the website #39;s hugely popular, like Twitter, and the people wanting to use it is the regime #39;s own mouthpiece? That #39;s right, while Chinese netizens are officially banned from using Twitter, state-run Xinhua News Agency has an account. But it looks like even Xinhua has to scale the censorship wall mdash;or at least figure out how. In this Chinese language Xinhua Tweet, this message -- a response to a question asking why the account has not been active mdash;says, quote, "it can #39;t be helped, the previous account manager didn #39;t tell us how to scale the wall before he left, I am new here." That message, posted on March 10th 2011, appears to be the final word for Xinhua #39;s Chinese twitter account. But, that #39;s not the last of it mdash;Xinhua now has an English Twitter account. But if you want to check either that or the Chinese language one, you #39;d better not be living in China.
