One moment they were in the lead and on their way to winning. The next moment, they were in the second pack.

The Acton-Boxborough boys indoor track teams sprint medley relay team finished fifth at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

Colin Grip, Brendan Flaherty, Matt Antes and Will Collins finished in 3 minutes, 40.37 seconds. Bishop Loughlin of Rhode Island was first in 3:35.70.

A-B led through the first three legs of the race, but a dropped baton on the final leg set the Colonials back. By the final lap, the eight-team field separated into two four-team groups, with A-B leading the second pack.

It was just a slip-up, said Flaherty.

Said Gripp, We were doing pretty well, but there are some things that happen no matter how much you practice.

Northampton was second in 3:36.93. Lexington was third (3:38.75) and Brookline was fourth (3:40.37).

The New Balance Indoor Grand Prix is a professional event with top athletes from all over the world. The meet includes a handful of high school and youth events including the sprint medley.

Its disappointing, Antes said. It was a good experience.
