CSI is one of the longest running and most beloved crime procedural drama franchises in television history. For the past fifteen years, its thrilled, charmed, and even provided a warped sense of comfort to audiences all over the world. Tonight, the fourth CSI television series hits primetime.

CSI: Cyberis attempting to take the world of Crime Scene Investigation into the internet age and we aresimultaneously very excited and extremely trepidatious about it. Why are we so torn? Well, every single pro for the show is also a resounding con.

Why This Is Exciting: When the original CSI, aka CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, debuted on television in 2000, forensics was still kind of cutting edge to a lot of viewers. Sure, we would hear about DNA evidence in Dateline reports and we knew all about fingerprints, butwhat madeCSI: Crime Scene Investigation so compelling was how they made the oftentedious and extremely scientific part of law enforcement thrilling to watch.

We now live in a far more technologically advanced world. Both criminals and law enforcement are using the internet in new and exciting ways to wage war. Its about time that CSI cracks into the the shady world of cyber crime.

Why This Is Worrying: Its not exactly fun watching a person surf the internet.

Since computers became mainstream, filmmakers have struggled to depict hacking, coding, and general internet tomfoolery as something that is dynamic and dramatic. If CSI: Cyber is all about cyber crime, then were probably going to see more people pounding away on keyboards than we will see actual human beings interact with each other.

Why This Is Exciting: TV is now where great actresses can go to find nuanced, complicated, and well-written characters to play and the most flaccid of shows can be elevated by a stellar leading lady. Consider the energy and passion that Taraji B. Henson injects into Empire week after week. So, it makes sense that Patricia Arquette would move to television right after winning an Oscar for her luminous performance in Boyhood. Arquettes decision to take this role on this show suggests that CSI: Cyber might have unique depth.

Why This Is Worrying: Okay, so Patricia Arquette really doesnt need to be on a CSI show. She just had a short arc on Boardwalk Empire and she just won a FREAKING Oscar. Crime procedurals are for washed up stars and those actors and actresses who have long been locked in the world of TV. Furthermore, is Arquettes recently upped profile going to take us out of the story? I mean, just the idea of Patricia Arquette talking about cyber crime is, um, kind of funny to me? Of course, shes a great actress and can play anything, but is it possible that right now, on the heels of her Oscar win, that her fame and talent will be a drawback?

Why This Is Exciting: James Van Der Beek is just super fun and its always good to see him pop up on screen. He was great on Dont Trust The B and we still kind of sort of have a crush on him dating back to his Dawsons Creek days.
