COLUMBIA Columbia police and a crime scene investigation van were still at the scene Monday afternoon of a fatal shooting in a north Columbia subdivision.

Yellow police tape surrounded the house at 5001 Silver Mill Drive, where neighbors said the shooting occurred. The house is on the far eastern edge of the Forest Ridge Subdivision, along a bend in the road edged by woods.

Backyards near the house were also cordoned off with yellow tape.

No arrests were made Monday, but the victim was identified as Deante Mardell Smith,17, whose address was listed as Andy Drive in Columbia, according to online court records.

Investigators and uniformed police officers could be seen combing the area around the site, taking measured steps as they scanned the ground.

One house, up the road about 100 yards from where the shots were fired, had a bullet hole in the center of its tan garage door.

According to a Columbia Police Department news release, officers were responding to a report of armed robbery about 4 p.m. Sunday in the 5000 block of Silver Mill Drive when multiple calls came in reporting shots fired in the area.

A second person was injured in the incident in which multiple shots were fired, striking several nearby houses.

When officers got there, they found Smith, who was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead, according to the release.
