EU committed to democracy in Nigeria

The Ambassador of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Michel Arrion, has reiterated the interest and commitment of the EU to the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria in particular and Africa in general.

He stated that EU had a long history of cooperation and collaboration with Nigeria.

Speaking in Ilorin on Sunday during his visit to Kwara State, he also said the EU was committed to building peace process in Nigeria, Africa and across the globe.

The envoy said the EU had already established trade cooperation with Nigeria, adding that EU has over 40 years of cooperation with Nigeria.

According to him, the cooperation is not only in the field of development but more importantly, in political development.

He also said the EU not only maintains cooperation with the Federal Government but also tries to establish links with states in the country.

Arrion said, The EU is interested in democratic process in Nigeria and in other African countries. We believe strongly in regional integration both at the economic and political levels. The European project is not a common market. Primarily, the EU project is peace. After 500 years of wars and two world wars, finally we have decided in the 50s that too much war was too much, and we have decided to make peace by integrating with our neighbours. More than 60 years later, we are still building our unions.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Ecology and Environment, Dr. Bukola Saraki, commended the EU for its roles in the sustenance of democracy and stability of the country.

He noted the role of the EU during the postponement of the 2015 general elections and during the collation of the March 28 presidential election.

He also canvassed for greater cooperation between the EU and Nigeria so as to maximise the opportunities and potential of Nigeria and for mutually beneficial integration.
