JAKARTA, April 28 (Bernama) -- Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who is also the Democrat Party's chairman of the advisory board said the party was ready to become the Opposition in the Indonesian Parliament if it failed to form a coalition with other parties of equal status.

"If there is no consensus on the candidate for President or party among other parties that are on a similar platform with us...that will be our proposal, that of to become the opposition.

"It is better for us to be on the outside (Opposition), free and independent but at the same time fighting for the nation," he said when closing a convention to choose the Democrat Party's Presidential candidate, here Sunday.

Susilo said the party would not form a coalition just to earn a ticket to name the candidate for President in the coming Presidential election on July 9.

He said all options were open and stressed that the Democrat Party was not an opportunist party.

Susilo who met the leaders of the Democrat Party said there was a call to drop the idea of forming a 'central axis' as one of the strategies to name the Presidential candidate from the party.

There were also suggestions that the Democrat Party join Parti Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan (PDI-P) and support its candidate for President, Joko Widodo or better known as Jokowi.

However, Susilo and PDI-P leader Megawati Soekarnoputri are not in 'good terms' since 2004 because Susilo who was Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security Affairs quit the cabinet which was led by Megawati to contest for the post of President in 2004.
