Attorney General Holder praises career of deputy US marshal fatally shot on duty in Louisiana

MOSS POINT, Miss. Attorney General Eric Holder says a deputy U.S. marshal who was killed in a shootout in Louisiana was a leader who carried on his family's legacy in law enforcement.

Holder delivered the eulogy Tuesday for Josie Wells at a funeral service in Mississippi.

The 27-year-old Wells was killed in a shootout last week near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, while he and other officers tried to arrest a man suspected of killing two siblings outside a nightclub.

Holder read a message from President Barack Obama. Holder said that Wells knew the risks and importance of his job and that he wore the badge proudly.

Wells' wife is pregnant with the couple's first child, a boy who'll be named for his father.

Wells was the first deputy marshal killed in the line of duty in the U.S. since March 2011.
