Hungarians' views on the European Union are becoming more positive and its institutions are trusted at an above average rate, Eurobarometers survey conducted on November 8-17 revealed yesterday.

Almost 40% of people surveyed expressed positive attitudes towards the EU, an increase from the previous years 35%. In a regional comparison, the EU was seen as slightly more favorably only in Poland and Romania.

Some 51% of Hungarians queried said they trusted the European Commission, a figure well above the EU average of 38%. Approximately 52% expressed confidence in the European Parliament, compared with the EU average of 42%.

According to 53% of Hungarians, the four freedoms, namely the free movement of persons, goods, services and capital, were seen as the most important assets of the European Union. However, only 37% of Hungarians queried regarded the freedom to travel, study or work in other EU member states as a personal advantage.

An increasing number of Hungarians (43%) believe that the EU takes Hungarys interests into consideration when making decisions and laws. The number of citizens who identified themselves as "a European, and at the same time a Hungarian" doubled to 60%.
