Child drowns at west Kissimmee complex

Kissimmee police detectives have made an arrest related to the Friday night drowning and death of a four-year-old Alabama girl at a Kissimmee townhome.

Elijah Darnell Morton, 28, from Birmingham, Ala., was arrested and charged with aggravated child neglect after the girl fell into the pool at Coral Cay Townhomes and was found at the bottom five minutes later.

Morton and his girlfriend took nine children to the complex's pool, including the victim, police spokesperson Stacie Miller said. Some of the children were theirs others were relatives of Morton's girlfriend, including the four-year-old victim. The child was found on the bottom of the pool unresponsive. Morton's girlfriend attempted CPR, while Morton did not assist and told her to stop and take the children back to the townhome. Police responded at approximately 8 p.m. Friday. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead around 9:15 p.m.

Detectives interviewed Morton, who stated he hadnt seen the young girl after she was in the kiddie pool at approximately 7:50 p.m. Morton was seen near the child between 7:55 and 8 p.m. when she was found at the bottom of the pool. Morton was transported to the Osceola County Jail.
