He has been involved in various other violent altercations and violation of law. Later he also started selling his painting which also involved a lot of controversy. His auction of the gun which he used to kill Taryvon Martin, led to massive public outrage.
George Michael Zimmerman, commonly known as George Zimmerman, was born on October 5, 1983 in Manassas, Virginia. Zimmerman belongs to a multicultural family with his mother Gladys Cristina Zimmerman, who was born in Peru, having some African ancestry through her Afro-Peruvian maternal grandfather and Zimmermans father being an American with German descent.
Zimmermans father worked in military for 22 years with last 10 years of his career devoted to Department of Defence. Before retiring in 2002, Zimmerman Sr. worked as magistrate in Fairfax Countys 19th Judicial District. George Zimmerman has three siblings consisting of one brother and two sisters namely Robert Jr., Grace and Dawn respectively.
George Zimmerman is listed as a Hispanic and was raised as a Catholic. He also served as an altar boy for 10 years from the age of 7 to 17 years. Zimmerman was sent to All Saints Catholic School in Manassas before graduated to public high school. As Zimmerman wanted to become a Marine, so he joined after-school Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps program when he was 14 years old. Zimmerman completed his schooling from Osbourn High School in the year 2001.
After completing his schooling, Zimmerman shifted to Lake Mary, Florida and took employment in an insurance agency. Later on he worked with a car dealership and a mortgage Audit Firm and also enrolled himself to Seminole State College in 2009 for an associate degree in criminal justice. He was unable to complete this course as he failed in one of the courses.
George Zimmerman married to Shellie Dean, who was a licensed cosmetologist, on 17th November 2007. After two years of marriage, they settled in The Retreat at Twin Lakes situated in Sanford, Florida where they rented a townhouse. In 2013, after the shooting incident of Taryvon Martin, Shellie filed for divorce after six years of being married to George Zimmerman.
In 2016, their divorce got finalised. After his split with Shellie, Zimmerman had a girlfriend names Samantha Scheibe, who had accused Zimmerman of pointing a gun at her, though she later recanted her story.
A long list of criminal offences charged against George Zimmerman starts with Taryvon Martin Murder case. On 26th February, 2012 George Zimmerman heinously shot Taryvon Martin, who was a 17 years old Afro-American high school student. Zimmerman was the neighbourhood watch coordinator in his gated community, The Retreat at Twin Lakes, where the incident took place.
Taryvon Martin was staying here temporarily. Following an altercation that broke between Zimmerman and Martin, Zimmerman shot Martin. At that moment, Martin didnt possess any weapons. Following the incident, Zimmerman was taken into custody and questioned, though later he was released on grounds of self defence.
However, as the news spread, there was a public outcry demanding arrest of Zimmerman and full investigation in the case. Due to this widespread and intense protest, six weeks after the murder Zimmerman was arrested on charges of murder.
The trial against Zimmerman began on 10th July, 2013 in Sanford, however, on 13th July 2013 he was acquitted of the charge of second degree murder of Taryvon Martin. For three years, an investigation was conducted by U.S. Department of Justice on the charges of violation of civil rights and in February 2015, Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges of civil rights violation of Martin on grounds of insufficient evidence.
On 28th September, 2015 Zimmerman retweeted the evidence photo of Taryvon Martin used during the trial which was later taken down by Twitter. This showed lack of apathy and remorse on part of Zimmerman.
Even after his acquittal in 2013 in Martin murder case, Zimmerman had multiple encounters with law. On 9th September, Zimmermans wife Shallie called up police and pressed the charges that Zimmerman tried to threaten her and her father with a gun and also punched her father on the face. Later she declined to press charges against Zimmerman so no case was filed.
On 18th November 2013, Zimmermans girlfriend Samantha accused him of pointing a gun at her and breaking her belongings. However, later she requested to drop all charges against Zimmerman and to lift the ban imposed on him from seeing her. Again, the prosecution dropped the case against Zimmerman.
On 9th September 2014, Zimmerman was accused in road rage incident in which another driver, Matthew Apperson claimed that Zimmerman followed and threatened him. On 11th May 2015, Apperson shot at Zimmerman, causing minor facial injuries. Apperson was jailed on 15th May, 2014 and on 17th October, 2016 Apperson was sentenced to 20 yrs in jail on charges of attempt of 2nd degree murder.
On 9th November, 2016 Zimmerman was taken out of a bar after he hurled racial abuses against a waitress.
From December, 2013 Zimmerman started selling the paintings made by him. In late December that year, he sold his first painting of an American Flag for a whooping amount of $100,099.99 on eBay. Later it was reported that this painting was copied from a stock image taken by Shutterstock.
Later from August 2015, Zimmerman started selling limited prints of his painting Confederate Battle Flag along with Andy Hallinan who was a gun seller of Florida Gun Supply. This new painting highlighted three controversial topics vis a vis deaths of young black men, the Confederate battle flag and the discriminatory behaviour against American Muslims.
In August 2014 Rick Wilson, a Florida Photographer and Associated Press, demanded that the sale of one of the paintings of Zimmerman should be halted as it was a direct copy of a photo owned by AP. This was a painting of Angela Corey, Jacksonville-based prosecutor to which Zimmerman merely added a quote made by him. Following this, the sale of this and other paintings was halted by an attorney John Michael Phillips.
Later on, in May 2016, Zimmerman posted that he wished to auction his gun with which he had killed Taryvon Martin. The auction site, gunbroker.com on which the auction was supposed to happen on 12th May, removed this item from the list stating they didnt want to be a part of the publicity. Later the same month, Zimmerman sold his gun on another site namely United Gun Group. He received a whooping amount of $250,000 by selling his gun.
Following his arrest in 2012 on charges of murder of Taryvon Martin, Zimmerman opened a website to generate money in order to fight the case. To everyones surprise, website contributions reached $33,000 per month with the total contributions surpassing $150,000. Later Zimmerman also signed a contract with a leading publishing company.
The offer has still not been disclosed. Apart from this, Zimmerman also raised a lot of money from selling his paintings and from the auction of his gun which he killed Martin. There is still a lot of ambiguity in terms of the money he has received through various modes; however, his net worth has been estimated to be around $12 Million.
Zimmerman has been sattired in World War Zimmerman episode of South Park. This got premiered on 9th October, 2013 on Comedy Central in US. It is a combined parody of World War Z movie and the George Zimmerman trials of the murder case. Along with this, Zimmerman was included as a potential Republican Party presidential candidate in an Alaska Poll testing by Public Policy Polling to find out how he would do because of his popularity among conservatives. Zimmerman received 2% of support from Alaskans.
