Hillary Clinton inducted into gallery honoring those who almost became president – KOMO News

NORTON, Kans. (NTV)

After more than a year of giving speeches, debating, and traveling the nation, Donald Trump is now officially the 45th President of the United States.

With that, Hillary Clinton joins an elite group of politicians, a club that none of them wanted to be part of.

In Norton, Kansas, there is a a collection of photos and biographies you won't find anywhere else. One for every person who came in second, for a shot at the White House.

As their names and faces fade from the national spotlight this gallery is preserving their place in American history.

"The first woman being hung on the wall says a lot, even though she was a loser," said Reva Bengien, a Norton, Kansas native who went to see the unveiling of Clinton's photo in the gallery.

Its a tradition that's now 52-years-old.

"That's what we're here today to do, to hang Hillary as the loser. The winner in this aspect", said Bengien.

Friday, the First State Bank in Norton, Kansas added a new face to the They Also Ran Gallery.

"Who would come up with that idea? 'Let's make a gallery honoring people who lost,'" said Timothy Sprigg, who lives in Norton and went to see the unveiling of Clinton's photo in the gallery.

"A former owner of the bank, president of the bank, Walter Rouse, had the idea," said gallery curator, LeeAnn Shearer.

Shearer said Rouse was a history buff who was inspired after reading a book, They Also Ran, written by Irvin Stone.

"You're going to see winners among the losers. You're going to see George Bush Sr. in here, as he lost to Bill Clinton, but won his first attempt. You're going to see Jimmy Carter in here, who had won his first attempt, then lost to Reagan," said Shearer.

"It gives you an interesting look back, a measured look back through history, as you see who the top competition was," said Sprigg.

Friday was Sprigg's first visit to the gallery, and he says it won't be the last.

"People were very proud to honor her here today. She was very good competition and represents a large sector of our country, some would even say a majority, but for the time being this is where she stands and we're glad to have her here," said Sprigg.

Bengien says even though Clinton was defeated, the impact of her historic run will be felt by generations to come.

"I think she tells for us as women that we can do anything we set out to do," said Benien. "Sometimes, just because we're not a winner, we still have that privilege of doing things for our country," she added.
