About Suffs

Based on suffragists and the American women's suffrage movement, Suffs is a stage musical with music, lyrics, and a book by Shaina Taub.

It primarily focuses on the historical events leading up to the ratification of the 19th amendment to the US Constitution in 1920, which granted the right to vote to some women, primarily white women.

April 2022 saw its off-Broadway debut at The Public Theater.

On April 18, 2024, the production had its Broadway debut at the Music Box Theatre.

Critics gave it favorable reviews, and it was nominated for six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, at the 77th Tony Awards.

Former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as well as activist Malala Yousafzai, are on the production team.

Producer of musical Suffs Hillary Clinton took the stage this evening to introduce the musical to the audience.

"I am extremely proud of this original American Musical," she says to the crowd who greeted her with a standing ovation and applause.

"It's an election year and we need to be reminded of how important it is to vote," she added before introducing Suffs.

Angels in America star Jeffrey Wright is presenting the award for Best Play to Stereophonic.

The play stars Will Brill, Andrew R. Butler, Juliana Canfield, Eli Gelb, Tom Pecinka, Sarah Pidgeon, and Chris Stack.

Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Bebe Neuwirth are participating in a special tribute in honor of Chita Rivera, who died in January at the age of 91.

They are honoring Rivera's illustrious seven-decade career in theater, having been in several musicals like Chicago, Bye Bye Birdie, West Side Story, and many more.

Ariana DeBose also joined in on the performance, dancing to America from West Side Story.

Actor Jim Parsons presented the award for Best Revival of a Play to Appropriate.

The play stars Sarah Paulson, Corey Stoll, and Michael Esper, among many others.

Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad took the stage as their characters in Guttenberg! The Musical in a comedy strip about what a revival of a musical is.

"It means that our show is already a classic," Rannells's character said.

They immediately after introduced nominee Jim Parsons.
