India bans ‘Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’

David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has been
receiving rave reviews across the United States since it hit
theaters last year, but India isn’t having any of it.

The Wrap reported the South Asian nation is
banning its theaters from showing the movie because the film’s
director refused to censor certain scenes.

Fincher was demanded by India’s Central Board of Film
Certification to tone down some of the R-rated film’s
disturbing content, including a love scene between Rooney
Mara’s character Lisbeth Salander and Daniel Craig’s, Mikael
Blomkvist, a lesbian love scene between Lisbeth and a woman she
met at a bar, a rape scene where Lisbeth is assaulted by a
government worker, and a follow-up rape scene where Lisbeth
tortures her rapist.

According to E! Online, the film was supposed to premiere
on February 10 in the country.

Sony Pictures India explained their decision in a statement.

“Sony Pictures will not be releasing The Girl with the
Dragon Tattoo in India. The Censor Board has adjudged the
film unsuitable for public viewing in its unaltered form and,
while we are committed to maintaining and protecting the vision
of the director, we will, as always, respect the guidelines set
by the Board."

Fortunately, for those who were excited about watching the
film, there’s always the DVD.
