What’s Going On

Silently stunning

“The Artist,” the 1920s black and white film that is silently
sweeping this awards scene, is now playing at Rave Motion
Pictures’ Grand Prairie 18. Roger Ebert says this is a silent
movie for people who don’t think they like silent movies, so if
you’re thinking of taking in a flick today, this one’s worth
it.

Poetry unleashed

The Contemporary Art Center, 305 SW Water St., No. 2, will host
“Whisper and Shout,” an open mike event for inspiring and
sharing poetry, at 8 p.m. Thursday. Brandon Thornton (aka
Xplicit) will host, and the featured poet is Peoria native
Lonnie Whisker (“the Jay-Z of poetry.”) Admission is $4 for CAC
members, $7 for the public.

Plowing into town

Monster Jam — with several trucks including Grave Digger — is
headed to the Peoria Civic Center arena for shows at 7 p.m.
Friday and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $10.50 to $42
for kids, and $17 to $42 for adults. Visit the Box Office, any
Ticketmaster outlet, call (800) 745-3000, or go online to
Ticketmaster.com.

Tell me a story

The Peoria Prairie Tellers Storytelling Guild will host “Winter
Tales” at 7 p.m. Saturday at the RiverPlex, 600 NE Water St.
Admission is $5 advance, $7 at the door. Call 682-2915 or
692-0993.
