Mitt Romney cautions Obama on immigration reform – NY …

Bolstered by GOP victories in the midterm elections, former White House contender Mitt Romney warned President Obama Sunday not to tackle immigration reform on his own.

Romney said that if Obama went ahead and used executive action to push immigration reform through it would be like poking an eye of the Republican leaders in Congress.

My advice to the Democrats at this point and to the President in particular is to take a breath, the former Republican presidential nominee said on CBS Face the Nation.

The American people sent a very clear message to the President about his policies, Romney added. Theyre not happy with them.

Before leaving the G20 summit in Australia Sunday, Obama gave no indication of backing down from issuing an executive order that could shield about 5 million immigrants from deportation.

There is a very simple solution to this perception of somehow Im exercising too much executive authority: pass a bill I can sign on this issue, Obama said.

The President issued a warning of his own to Republican leaders who have threatened to shut down the government if he wields his executive pen on immigration.

We traveled down that path before. It was bad for the country, he said.
