Islamabad, April 1: Iran has said it is willing to mediate between Pakistan and India on Kashmir, if requested, because any conflict between the neighbours will impact upon the economies of other countries in the region.

Iran's ambassador to Pakistan Mehdi Honardoost said his country was ready to use its relations with Pakistan and India to mediate on Kashmir and help bring sustainable peace in the region, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan reported.

"Iranian government has announced its readiness for any support, for any hope of peace and tranquillity in the region," Honardoost was quoted as saying by the APP.

"We have not yet received any official request from both sides for Iran as a large country in the region to come and try to solve the matter," the envoy said.

This is not the first time Tehran has offered to mediate on Kashmir. In December, Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif had said Iran was ready to speak to India and Pakistan for an amicable solution.

"Iran is a close friend of India as well as Pakistan," Zarif had said. "We would like the relations between our friends to improve. We are ready to do whatever we can, if both our friends so desire."

But the offers, Iranian officials concede, are little more than signals to India and Pakistan that their tensions are hurting its economic and strategic interests. Crucial in these offers is the caveat that Iran will intervene if both sides want it to.
