Dr Khatereh Eghdamian counts herself fortunate to callNew Zealand home. The Iranian-born advisor on human rights,Associate at Oxford House Research and Associate at theCentre for Religion and Global Affairs, was granted refugehere after escaping a regime intent on persecuting Baha'is,the largest non-Muslim religious minority in the country.Eghdamian believes the recent intensification of persecutionsignals the implementation of a larger plan by the Iraniangovernment to increase pressure on the community. Thecurrent campaign includes raids on Bahai homes andbaseless arrests of Bahais. So far, dozens of Baha'ihomes have been raided by authorities in Baharestan,Isfahan, and Shiraz, resulting in the detention of over 20Bahais and more who can be called to prison at anytime.

Eghdamian said targeted, ongoing incidents, ranging from confiscation of property and suddenimprisonment to denying access to burial land were aimed atsystematically eradicating the Bahai community as aviable entity.

Waves of domestic and internationalsupport for the Bahais in Iran has generated a globaloutcry in solidarity for the most basic human rights ofIranian citizens. Worldwide support and solidarity areessential in relieving the injustices which Iranian Baha'isare continually subjected to saidEghdamian.
