Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are back in school, but it feels more like pre-school than college.

As Pixar films go, Monsters University is a minor effort, lacking that creative zeal that hooks adults as well as youngsters. But with a bunch of new monsters and the usual talented vocal cast, Monsters University is still a fun time at the movies.

Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sully (John Goodman) are back with the story of how they met and they were not always the best of friends. Their very young years fly by quickly (not quickly enough, since the pacing of Monsters University is at times, kind of slow) and soon they both are enrolled at Monsters Universtiy and are rival.

Both want to get on the Scare learning track at ol MU, but have been denied. Sully because he is basically lazy, despite his great monster pedigree and Mike because he just isnt scary enough.

The two rivals decide to team up with a bunch of misfits from the universitys least scary fraternity, Oozma Kappa and enter the universitys scare challenge, a series of events that culminates with the Scare Simulator (think back to the original Monsters Inc. and its doorways to sleeping children).

The challenge goes on too long, as does Monsters University, but CGI is still among the best in the business, making Monsters University a worthy 3D choice, if you should decide to go.

Among the other hightlights is Helen Mirrens vocal talents for Dean Hardscrabble, the scariest character in all of Monsters University.

Add this to the disappointing Cars 2 and it would appear that Pixar is on a bit of a decline. Then again, we probably all got spoiled by the likes of Cars, WALL-E, Up, the Toy Story Trilogy, etc.

Pixar is shown in top form again though with an animated short that precedes Monster University, The Blue Umbrella, an enchanting little tale about a rainy day in the city and a romance that weathers the storm between a blue umbrella and a red one.
