Libya decries arms stockpiles

Libya has appealed for international help to identify the deadly arsenal of arms still beyond the state control in the country.

Libyas Ambassador to the AU, Masoud Rahim, told the bodys Peace and Security Council meeting on Thursday that the arms arsenal was a direct threat to regional stability.

We revolted against a regime that oppressed us, the Libyan diplomat said in a statement read on his behalf to the PSC meeting on Silencing the Guns.

The toppled regime of Mouammar Khadafi stockpiled an enormous weapons cache, most of which were destroyed in NATO-led air strikes in 2011.

Most of the weapons, including 600 armoured vehicles and military tanks as well as artillery and rocket launchers, were destroyed by the air strikes.

We need to lay a foundation for peace through the disarmament.

The control of weapons flow and the disarmament with the help of the regional economic blocs and the AU is critical, the Libyan diplomat said.

He expressed regret that Africa was unable to effectively deploy the full use of the massive human resources existing within the continent because of wars.

Effective peace-building will enable Africa to use its natural and human wealth. We have made progress on the economic front but we must now make progress in addressing these conflicts in Africa.

We have ethnic and religious violence still holding us back, the Libyan diplomat told the Council.
